Introduction: The US Supreme Court and Judiciary People in the United States sometimes think of the courts as standing outside the world of politics. It is true that judges have greater distance from the day-to-day political process than do public officials in the other branches of government. But the courts are also linked to the political world in powerful ways.

Federal and state judges in this country are selected through a variety of procedures. As much as these selection methods differ from each other, they all have in common that judges are chosen through a political process. In that respect the United States differs from most other countries, in which judges are typically selected through a civil service-like process within the legal system.
