Introduction:

Read the JCEL case, Leaders on the front line, accessible on the Module 2 Readings and Resources page.

Select and answer three (3) of the questions below.

Expectations:

· Select three of the questions below to answer. Be sure to include the question first, followed by your answer.

· Your responses should include details from the case, examples from your experience, and evidence from the course material (or other scholarly material). An answer to each question may be as long as a full page, though your responses should be succinct and logical essay-type responses rather than a listing of related issues.

· Use the assignment template to format your paper properly (Times New Roman, 12 pt. font, double spaced, APA formatting).

Questions (Select 3 to Answer):

1. What were AP Soria’s ethical and legal responsibilities in these scenarios? For example, why did she feel she needed to call the SRO/school police officer, and why did she ask Mr. Taylor to notify the students’ parents? Why did Ms. Soria seek guidance for devising an improvement plan as a possible next step for Ms. Wilson?

2. Do you feel AP Murray as an administrator approached each situation with an appropriate balance of adherence to district policy and enforcement of legal/ethical requirements with a positive tone for relationship building? Explain your answer.

3. Difficulties arise for school administrators when students, teachers, and coaches disregard the appropriate school and district policies and procedures. For example, the Math teacher, Ms. Wilson, was unwilling to update her teaching methods to align with the CCSS. How can supervision demand, such as placing a teacher on an improvement plan, confound relationships and everyday supervisory responsibilities? How might veteran teachers be supported to stay current with instructional changes and keep their dignity?

4. Day-to-day supervision of teachers and students can impact your role and effectiveness as a leader. Were the school administrators and teachers in this case study seen as overly restrictive or overly laissez-faire in their encounters with others? For example, what are potential implications if students disrespect an administrator or teacher and are not disciplined as per school or district policy guidelines? Explain your answers.

5. Administrators must be able to identify and manage emotion in leadership, reflect on situations, and seek balance for their own growth and development. Discuss the cycle of emotions experienced by novice administrator Linda Soria that day (i.e., shocked, outraged, exasperated, discouraged, determined, frustrated, angry, and betrayed). Did both APs, Ms. Soria and Mr. Murray, take into account the emotions of others? Provide a critique of what you might have done differently or the same if you were in each of the following roles: (a) AP Linda Soria, (b) AP Tom Murray, and (c) Principal Harrison.

6. How do you process emotion as a professional ethical educator? One method for processing emotion is articulated in related articles (Tenuto, Gardiner, & Yamamoto, 2015 (Links to an external site.) ; Yamamoto, Gardiner, & Tenuto, 2014 (Links to an external site.)) and summarized in the Teaching Notes section. We encourage you to use the articles to deepen your own understanding of emotion in leadership. Would you use the method described in the articles, or do you have your own method for processing emotion to manage effectively the complex challenges of school leadership? What about self-care? Explain your answers.

7. Finally, what new understandings of managing emotion and ethical decision making emerged from your discussion? Are there differences among the group contributors? Why?
