This week's readings pertain to the ways in which post-Soviet Central Asian states have reacted to the "Islamic revival" that we've been talking about over the last few weeks. I'd like you to write a 200-250 word essay about how the independent post-Soviet states have reacted to Islam. How have these reactions differed from how the Soviet government treated Islam? What do you think explains these differences? How does the state (that is, the government) "use," "manage," or "co-opt" religion, and how do you think that governmental conceptions of Islam differ from the "lived" understandings of Islam that we've read about recently?
