You will engage in a “close reading” of a poem or multiple poems in order to extract information from the poem(s). You will employ multiple strategies to do so. You are not required to conduct research for this essay. However, if you decide you would like to bring in research materials, you are welcome to use the article databases available to you through the library as well as good old fashioned books. The purpose of the essay is to demonstrate your ability to closely read and interpret poetry AND manufacture critically thought out arguments and conclusions about the poetry. Like any essay, you will be required to produce a thesis and back it up with claims that are supported by textual evidence.
Organization
Introduction: Give your audience an ever-so-brief introduction to the poem (or poems), the author (or authors), and your thesis.
Body: In a highly-organized manner, the body should make use of textual evidence from the poetry to support the thesis.
Conclusion: Reinforce your thesis by summarizing the claims you have made in the body of the paper as well as the evidence from the poem(s).
Special Note:
The only requirement is that the poem or poems is/are in our textbook.
Also, you MUST include a works cited page for at least the poem or poems you are writing about. Each poem requires its own works cited entry--you are not simply citing your textbook as a source, you are citing the poem (or poems) as part of the textbook. Please review the MLA sources from earlier this semester to see how that is done.
