Introduction
1. Attention Getter:
Do we all know despite the drinking legal age is 21 around 7.3 billion Americans between age of 12 and 20 report current alcohol consumption, this represents 19% of this age group for whom alcohol consumption is illegal. So, many youths have already tasted or consumed alcohol before the legal age.
2. Transition to thesis:
This has been long going debate. Drinking at the age of 18 is still considered taboo by the society.
3. Thesis Statement:
Drinking from young age is not a problem until and unless you involve in any drinking related offense like drink and drive or it doesn’t affect your health. Frequently seeing this law being ignored by many youths, there is no harm in making the drinking legal age to 18 and focusing more on teaching the youths responsible drinking.
Section 1.
Define problem:
Why we even consider a law when it is ignored by 70% of the youths?
1. Describe: Law is something that should be strictly followed by the people of that country and it is possible if only the people are happy with the law if not then the law gets frequently broken.
2. Example: Many youths are unhappy with this law therefore they ignore it and take alcohol before 21.
3. Who affected: This has indirectly affected the law system as they still find so many youths not obeying the law and has somehow affected the youths too as they it all happens inside the door making it riskier.
Cause/history of the problem: As, many people think youths cannot handle alcohol at young age, so they don’t support the idea of making the drinking legal age to 18.
1. Where how it originated: It all started because people have a mindset that youths aged 18 are not mature enough to handle the alcohol and their body is also not much capable to resist the alcohol that may lead to serious health issues.
2. Causes: The main opposing view is due to the health concerns and the level of maturity in the youths.
Seriousness/Consequences: The number of youths who consume alcohol from very young age is increasing if this continues we will have more than 70% of the youths not following this law and getting punished.
1. Negative effects: Youths don’t get to buy it doesn’t mean they don’t have it. They take alcohol by hiding and have no absolute idea about in what limit they should have it.
2. How serious: This could be more dangerous. They have no idea about how to drink it responsibly?
3. Consequences: When there is will there is way, so youths will find a way to have it.
Section 2: Solution
Solution: It’s the high time that U.S should consider changing the legal age to 18.
1. Overview of solution: 18 is the age of adulthood in the U.S.A. Youths have right to vote, fight in Vietnam but why cannot they order a beer. There is not much difference in between age 18 and 20. It has become a kind of taboo that drinking at young age is not good.
2. Research to support: Though legal drinking age is 21 this has not stopped the drink related offences which proves that age doesn’t make much of a difference.
Implementation: As, many youths are in support of lowering the legal drinking age it will easy for implementing it once it has become a law. We will see less youths neglecting the law.
1. Process of implementation: We can make the drinking legal age to 18 and along with that state can make a special permit for the youths to buy and consume alcohol. In the colleges also, the responsible drinking can be taught to the youths.
2. Possible problems: People might oppose showing the health concerns especially for young people they might say alcohol is not healthy, but they might not know that it is in fact good if we drink it in limit. Another opposing view may be regarding the accidents that youths might be involved taking alcohol but increasing the age to 21 has not eradicated it.
3. Drawbacks: The population other than the youths might be unhappy with this law.
Outcomes: Lowering the legal age to 18 will avoid the risky drinking of the youths.
1. Benefits: At first the new law will be followed by many youths. They will not have alcohol behind the doors which will make it less risky.
2. Compare to other solution: There is no better solution regarding this problem except lowering the age and having special permit classes for youths to buy alcohol and consume it along with teaching them appropriate drinking.
Conclusion:
1. Summary: By the above research we have come to analyze that lowering the age will not make much of difference if responsible drinking is taught to youths and special permit classes is provided to youths.
2. Relate to the world today or future: If we see the data many youths start to drink from early age. In this time 21 is a very old number to make it a legal age for drinking.
3. Call to action/final thought: The U.S should consider lowering the age to 18 and should give more emphasis to teach them how to drink in limit so that it won’t affect their health and should focus more on stopping drink related crimes.
