Outline

You have been hired as a website developer by a new client, Joe Smithson. Joe has contracted you to design an interactive website for his company, Joe’s Garage. Joe's Garage offers warrant of fitness (WOF) services, as well as major and minor automobile repairs. Joe needs a website that enables customers to book appointments for WOFs and mechanical services. Based on the following brief, you must design a suitable website with a structure that demonstrates your understanding of website planning and design, as well as Web 2.0 functionality such as blogs, social media and user-generated content.

Joe’s Garage is doing very well in the local market, but currently has no online presence. Joe does not know much about website design or what to include in the website. Therefore, you must use your knowledge and creativity to develop the site, following the guidelines below.

Company Brief

Joe Smithson established Joe’s Garage in 2005. He currently advertises in local newspapers and receives customer calls on his cell phone. He keeps his appointments organised on his smartphone, as he is relatively comfortable using this type of device.

Joe's Garage operates six days a week. Most repair jobs are booked Monday-Friday and most WOF appointments are on Saturdays. When a customer calls or texts Joe to book an appointment, Joe will record in his journal the name and phone number of the customer, date and time of the appointment, as well as the services that the customer requires.

However, Joe has found this is a very ineffective way of operating because every time he answers the phone he has to stop his present job. In the company’s early days, he could remember the names of most of his clients, but since the business has grown this approach is simply not working.

In addition, he has begun employing Luke, a student from a local university, to help with basic jobs two days per week. Luke was the one who suggested Joe needs a website to take orders and advertise online, as well as having a blog to help customers maintain their vehicles. Luke also thinks social media would be a good way to advertise to a wider range of customers. Joe likes the idea, and he started discussing online bookings with his customers. About 80% of them responded positively to the idea, so he decided to go ahead with contracting you to set up the site.

Guidelines

1. Website Specification (30 marks)

Thought, planning and research need to take place before building the website begins. This needs to be specified to guide development of the design and ensure the final design meets the client’s requirements as closely as possible. In this section you must:

1.1 Outline the goal of the site.

1.2 Outline all the expected user groups of the site.

1.3 Show evidence of Internet research (provide a list of at least 4 websites of competitors, with screenshots) and analyse the design elements CRAP (contrast, repetition, alignment and proximity) for each.

1.4 Present the website structure you propose, outlining how you developed the structure of the site from your research and analysis.

1.5 Explain the design elements you will use (i.e., colours, fonts, graphics, layouts)

1.6 Prepare an asset inventory for the website.

Refer to Practical Two: Website Planning if you are unsure about any of these terms.

There is no word limit, but it is expected that a minimum of 1,000 words are necessary to convey your Website Specifications.

2. Social Media Channel Selection (30 marks)

For this section, you must utilise the Social Media Channel Selection Tool in order to decide which social media channels Joe Smithson will include as part of his website.

Download the “Social Media Channel Selection” Excel file from MyWeb > Files > Final Assignment

Begin by opening the Instructions tab at the bottom of the sheet, and read the step-by-step instructions carefully. Consider the Selection Criteria, keeping Joe’s Garage in mind. You are required to customize the Weighting Scale according to how important you think each criterion is to the business. The weighting must add up to 100% before you progress to the next step.

When progressing to the Channel Scoring step, you must consider each of the selection criteria in relation to social media channels for Joe’s Garage. You are required to rank each criterion for each channel, from 1-10 (1 being poor, and 10 being excellent). Screenshot this when completed and insert into your Final Assignment.

After you have done this, you will be able to see the Rankings. Follow the instructions to sort these from largest to smallest. The Rankings will show you which channels are likely to be most appropriate for your business. Screenshot this when completed and insert into your Final Assignment.

Lastly, the Bubble Matrix tab offers a visual representation of the channels you rated, with the matrix showing low and high feasibility, and low and high strategic fit. The larger the bubble is, the higher the impact of the channel will be. Discuss which channels are Top Priorities for Joe’s Garage. Screenshot your Bubble Matrix and insert into your Final Assignment.

3. Visual Design (40 marks)

In this section, you are required to design and build the pages for the company’s website using your choice of web development service (i.e., Wix, Weebly, Google Sites, Yola, Mockingbird).

You will follow your Website Specification in regard to design, as well as fulfil the following brief for Joe’s Garage:

· Contain at least four web pages, but no more than twelve.

· Contain a booking form that enables customers to fill in their details and request the company’s services.

· Fulfil all requirements as detailed in the Company Brief.

· Make reasoned and appropriate use of CRAP design elements as taught in Practical Three.

· Include the Social Media channels identified as Top Priorities through the Social Media Selection Tool in Section 2.

Please note you are not limited to the information provided in the company background, although any content added must be reflective of the type of organisation you are designing for.

There is no word limit, but it is expected that a minimum of 500 words be provided in this section to explain how your final Visual Design matches your Website Specification and how it is relevant and suitable for the client.

To summarize, Joe’s Garage requires:

· A website with the ability to advertise the company’s services, which are:

· Warrant of fitness services

· Minor mechanic repairs

· Major mechanic repairs

· Tyre changes

· Wheel alignment

· Ability for customers to book appointments, with a form collecting these details:

· Customer name

· Customer email address

· Customer phone number

· Preferred date for appointment booking

· Preference for morning or afternoon

· Payment service or method (e.g., PayPal button, does not need to be functional)

· A place to for the user to write additional notes

· A blog to show some of the work Joe and Luke do and offer advice for car care and maintenance.

· An ‘About Us’ page for the company that includes Joe’s business philosophy and contact details of the company.

· Social media functionality (all social media channels identified as Top Priorities in Section 2)

In addition to the material provided above, you will need to generate the content for the website yourself, so be creative!

Joe’s Garage is an entirely fictitious company and any resemblance to an actual company is entirely coincidental – this information is not to be used for any purpose other than this assignment.
