Interview
Name, age, location:
Mika Sakamoto. 53 Years Old. Nagoya, Japan.
How easy was it for you to obtain affordable and nutritious food?
It is very easy. There are supermarkets everywhere because of the huge population.
Do you see a difference between low and high income neighborhoods with food acquired?
In low income neighborhoods there are families struggling from poverty and many kids only get meals at school. But for the most part there wasn’t a big difference overall.
How is food in schools?
School lunches were great. The lunches include a full meal that is very nutritional.
What was your experience with class, location, and food?
My experience was not difficult at all. Getting food was really easy. My family goes almost every day to the nearby markets. Japan is very safe anywhere you go so market accessibility was easy, especially when most people walk to their nearest stores. Most of the population in Nagoya is middle class with close to no slums.
In correlation with food supply, how is overall health?
Most people seem healthy however with all of the westernized food, it is causing obesity and people need to be careful with high blood pressure and cholesterol.
Were there any programs or activities to improve the food supply?
Most people eat healthy but there was education provided on healthy options in schools and workplaces.
Did it improve over the time period you lived there?
For me there was always food available but now there is much more variety. There’s a lot more processed and instant food.
How did the quality and accessibility affect your personal lifestyle and health?
I’ve felt mostly healthy, my family had lots of home cooked meals but have definitely had to buy more food over time and go out to eat more just because of how busy it has gotten.
Did you experience or know of any food deserts?
No, there’s always markets available within short walking distance.
How would you classify the economy there?
