Week 3 - The Value of Failure in Leadership
Interview questions:
What can be learned by failing? That you don’t have to limited or paralyzed by failure. Failing can be fuel to refocus and refresh for the next time. The lesson is never stop, learn from failing but keep trying.
You seem pretty confident and successful. Have you ever exposed your team to the idea of failure to prepare them for consequences if the wrong choices are made? I have shared victories and failures with my team. I want them to understand this is life not a dress rehearsal and life does not come with an eraser. Your choices have consequences and it is your decision how those consequences will affect your response and behavior. Confidence is a seed that is continually watered with the words of your mouth. You control what you see in the mirror and how you will interact with others. Walking by Faith does not mean perfect days and choices. Faith walk will allow you to overcome wrong choices and redirect you to the right path. I want my team to understand the importance of trusting and believing in who God’s says you are and that mistakes don’t define who you were created to be.
In what ways does failure affect success? Failure affects success if you don’t learn and grow. Success will not be sustained, nor will you be Thankful if failures are on replay loop in your mind and heart. Failure is not final, keep going.
What do you think is the value of failure? The value can be growth, maturity and an opportunity to help someone else. It is like fertilizer on a yard, it smells at first but the beautiful grass that comes from it will eventually cause you to forget the smell. Failures gives you a testimony on how you triumphed over a trial.
How can having a failure change the way you make decisions or do business in the future? If failure is embraced as a learning experience and not a stumbling block, you will not be derailed with fear and disappointment. Future business will be based on new information and conducted differently.
Some leaders seem to always make the right decisions and therefore experience a lot of success. How can too much success interfere with creativity? I don’t think to much success can interfere with creativity, I think not remaining humble and thankful will interfere with the creativity. The success is only sustainable if you understand how to maintain and manage.
What if we could design a controlled failure system for work that could tap creativity without causing fear or stress? Humans are not robots and designing a controlled system will work for a machine but not a functioning human. To avoid stress people must do what I coined as AIM. That simply means when the system fails or there is change that is out of your control, you must AIM. A – adjust and adapt without complaining I – invest in knowledge and wisdom from others M – manage your emotions
