rough draft
Unknown 0:17 Okay, so first, I'd like to thank you for participating in my project. These interviews take about 20 to 25 minutes, and today we're going to talk about social media. So, my research topic is how does the type of social media time spent using social media and types of activities engaged on social media shape the experience of emotions around body image, and self-esteem among young Nepali social media users in the US? Unknown 0:48 So before I begin questioning about this project, I want to ask you about yourself. Unknown 0:54 I am Sason. And I'm an international student from Kathmandu, Nepal. Unknown 1:01 And I'm studying Business and Finance right now. Unknown 1:07 And that's pretty much it. Okay. Unknown 1:10 So my question is going to be divided into five sections. So, in the first section is going to be about the social media and the time you spend on it. So first, what type of social media do you use? Unknown 1:25 I use a lot of types like I use most of the types I use are like the communication one like the Facebook, Instagram, and like using YouTube's Netflix. And, like, I don't know if games are those are recorded in social media. Yeah. Yeah, there are definitely one of the types of media okay, I do the games too. Unknown 1:55 Okay, can you tell me why you prefer using these kinds of social media platforms? Unknown 2:03 I do not think I have a definite reason that I'm using four but it's basically like if I wanted to want to learn something, I usually watch YouTube and if I want like to communicate with my parents, I use messenger from Facebook. And for Facebook, I post memes and stuff like that sometimes just for fun. And so, it's basically about how those kinds of social media are for you. Right? But like if it is for communication purposes, or if it is for fun purposes, most of the things are for fun purposes and like to learn something sometimes it's not only the bad things, but it’s like you can also learn a lot from social media. And sometimes you're just wasting your time watching like reels and Instagram and, and tik toks to like but I don't use tick tock though. Okay. Unknown 3:02 Among all these kinds of social media, which one is the one that you use mostly, or frequently? I think I'm using my Instagram account more. Unknown 3:14 Because I don't know why that I don't have a specific reason I just my like, a habit. Unknown 3:23 I do not think while I'm using it. I think that's why I like using it, but I was not using it as much as I'm using it in America. I was using it way less in Nepal. But since I came to America, everything was I think every everybody likes to like to run around this screen in America. Like I think it's a little less than Nepal. Okay, so can you tell me what frequently means to you are the candidate specify any time for any of the social media? Yeah, if I'm using Instagram, it will usually be when I'm bored. Like, if, if I have few times left. If I'm waiting for somebody one or if I'm at work, that's when that's the time I'm using Instagram. And for like YouTubes and stuff I usually watch it when I'm in need to learn like music’s and like study related stuff. And Facebook Messenger I usually use it to call my parents in Nepal. So, find my parents, my friends in Nepal. Unknown 4:30 Yeah. So, if you are going to divide those social media into hours you spend so do you have any specific number of hours reviews are specific minutes, I do not have much idea but I can. Unknown 4:49 I can guess an hour's like I feel like I use around spend like two to three hours of my days using Instagram. And if I'm talking to my friends and my family's in in Nepal, I'll be using it for sometimes two hours or three hours. Because it will be a long talk and we don't talk to you frequently, like every day, sir. So that's the most the longest use of social media is for the communication purpose. Yeah, I think that that's what it is for. Okay, do you say at any specific time on a day to use these kinds of social media? Usually, it's not a good habit. I check it on YouTube too. I usually check my check my social media when I'm sleeping or when I'm about to go to bed and when I wake up, I think that's a bad habit. I need to change. Unknown 5:42 Do you agree using social media on your time off or it depends on where and when you need it. Unknown 5:50 I think it depends on my time more and more than what I needed. It's not like a drug like I needed like I'm addicted to it, but it's I think it's about spending my time like how I want to spend I feel like I'm wasting a lot of my time on social media and especially in Instagram. Unknown 6:06 Okay, so my next section of the topic will be the type of activities you engage on social media. Okay. What is the first thing you do when you open any social media applications? Any of those social media applications? What is the first thing you click on it? They asked me to login or yeah, they login first get into those social media. Okay. After I get in, like I usually take the newsfeed okay. And if I'm using YouTube, I think knew what I'm using YouTube. I pretty much know what I'm about to search on YouTube. So, you agree that all those notifications are already made by the algorithms on YouTube? Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. That that one? Yeah, I think that's the that's and that's true, too. I heard Facebook has been gathering a lot of illegal information from a lot of people from all around the world and, and I don't think that's a good thing to do. And even when I'm using social media, if I'm searching something on Amazon or like in Google that I want to buy it just pops up on my YouTube channels and like, Facebook thing, I think it was a coincidence when I was a kid, but, but now I feel like it's they're trying to they're trying to feed all those things stuffs into our, our like, the wall you know, okay, a lot of things. Goes on social media is like, what are some of the activities that you really like to engage and what are some of the activities that you keep away yourself from? Unknown 7:39 thing I like to keep myself away from a lot of illegal activities first, and other one is the scam, so I don't want to get involved into any kind of scams either. And I don't want to be a scammer either. And that's it. So basically, you don't want anything that has like no incorrect sun like no Intel or anything that has fake news, or oh, yeah. Oh, yeah, I don’t enjoy those. Because I like the way you pointed it, like fake news. Yeah, I don’t want those. So, I will be specific on the things I follow on social media. So usually, what I follow as my work-related stuff is like from finance and trading and all that stuff, and sometimes I even follow like celebrities or like like my idols in my in my carriers. And yeah, all right. So, my next section of the topic is going to be about the same. How do you describe your feeling toward your body and emotion while present on the social media apps? Okay. Unknown 8:56 So I what is what is the feeling that you get toward I recently kind of dealt with this situation on my head? Because I was getting way kind of like depressed not depressed, but like we unsatisfied with my body. Because watching all these like so people in and Instagram and like in different kind of like platforms and this is just so tempting, like you want it to be like those people and the way you train I even try like working out and doing everyday kind of stuff. And it's not it did not give me the satisfaction like the body I really wanted to like and I recently I did my research on it and I found like a lot of social media people like making the perfect body ideal body or using like steroids and all that kind of like stuff like some of us don't even do plastic surgeries and I think that's there's a lot of like fake thing going on in social media that you want to protect yourself from because it's so overwhelming and it's so tempting and you need to be aware like what they're trying to do, like they're just trying to make money and they want to look good, and it's good for them. They're making money out of it like, but you don't want to like think about it and you'd be depressed or like we are unsatisfied with your own body type. Because every it's a journey like you just need to enjoy and be healthy and that that's pretty much it. I think there's a lot of fake things going on. Yeah. So, is there any is there any moment in the past couple of years or presently that you have compared your body with these social media influencers? Yeah, I did. Unknown 10:38 And just like I told you it was it was not a long time ago to like it was just like recent couple of months ago. So even my idol like I heard some rumors, but I don't want to talk about it. I don't want to pick his name, but I heard like he is he is, and he was using steroids on his like primase and he's a wrestler too. Unknown 10:59 But I want to pick his name, but it might be fake too. But I heard that news on social media and I was kind of disappointed by yet. Okay, does these things that does distance make it seem you look make it seem you lack something and feel low? Are those things being not your primary focus when you are on social media? I think I'm past that, so I don't feel before I used to feel kind of like in one point in my life, I felt like I was kind of like not the ideal type I'd like but now I'm so I'm so weird that it just it just the social media and all that there's a lot of faith. I believe in that thing. Like there's a lot of fake things going on, and people want to look good and it's good for them. But you said no. What do you want for yourself? And that's I think that's all I care about now. Unknown 11:48 Have you ever felt like not being able to present yourself as insert picture or videos because of not having that perfect buddy? Unknown 11:59 To be honest, I believe myself like, I believe I'm good enough. Good look into reposting my pictures on social media. I think that's what that's another reason I've been using social media. Unknown 12:11 And I'm not at as perfect as those figures, big figures but still like I think I'm presentable. Like, I don't have any issue with the presentation on social media. I don't think I care about it. Unknown 12:23 Okay, do you think in any way those social media influencers and digital content creators have built this perfect looking life, but it's affecting regular people like you to achieve that? Kind of lifestyle? I think it is. If the people are not aware they will be thinking like I need to get those life and everything, so I think not only me like a lot of people like a lot of people I've seen that have been affected by those social media things. And, and even the boiling stew there's a lot of oil is going on social media. And people try to act like them. Like they want to be tough, and they want to like stop the same thing and be famous and it's just, it's just sad. Okay, so my next section after question is going to be focused on the experience of emotions around body image and self-esteem. What do you feel when you log into your profiles and into social media world? Unknown 13:17 I usually feel about checking on my friends first because that's what I see on me like your story on Instagram. That's what I use the most. And it's about your feeling. Do you feel that like you really must check it out? Check it check in check in on it and you feel good. You feel what kind of feeling you get when you log into your account. I kind of enjoy it. Unknown 13:44 Yeah. has also made me feel good or bad about your body to be specific. Unknown 13:50 General in general, to this your body and social media. Unknown 13:56 I think I am a human being too, so I think I want that body to I want that lifestyle and I want that body. But now I'm aware that like I don't I don't need to get that. Like if I'm happy with myself and the things I'm doing. And the things I love to do. And I think I'm good with that. I don't think social media has affected me to that level, you know, okay. How has social media users contributed to your self-esteem? Unknown 14:24 It might be in a good way it might be in a bad way, or you don't take it seriously. I do not take it seriously. I think social media is just a way to pass my time sometime when I'm bored. And I do not think social media as the whole life like this. There's a lot of things going on and like it's just the social media. It's just on your phone. Like there's a real life outside. So, no reason that it has contributed to your self-esteem. Yeah. All right. Have you ever considered logging yourself out on social media when you see things that you don't like or agree with? Unknown 14:59 Yeah, no, I'm not really like I don't feel that angry to be honest. I just watched him, and I see the comments like I I kind of like to watch people fighting on the on the argue on the on the comment section of this. I'm kind of like controversial topics like it just it just for fun. So, I enjoy it. So, you basically don't engage on the kind of topic but you like to see what people are up to. Yeah, exactly. People have fun. This is just like watching them like typing a lot of likes, funny stuff. Okay, how do you describe your relationship with social media and its impact towards your mental health? I think I'm engaged with social media Unknown 15:39 affected your mental health in a good way or in a bad way. Unknown 15:43 My mental health I think it's a bad thing to do like just to watch social media before you go to bed and after you wake up, that's a bad habit I have and I hear I did some research to and I heard it's really bad for your eyes and your bedtime sleep. nighttime sleep. I mean, mentally do you prepare to talk about the topics that you like doing gazing? Are you just only engaged by reading other people's comments? Do you feel pressure to be commenting on those topics? Unknown 16:17 I don’t feel pressured. When I was a teenager. I used to feel pressure like I used to get so mad at those people what they were trying to say, and it didn't make sense to me. So, I wanted to fight with them in the comment section where now I'm a grown up, so I just watched them like I just enjoyed doing that thing. Right. Thank you. Unknown 16:37 So how old are you? I'm 22 years old. And how long have you lived in the United States? It's been my fourth year. This is a fourth year in the United States. Unknown 16:49 Okay. Unknown 16:51 Thank you so much for your time before we end. Can you tell how you can tell me how the interviews work, how the interview was? How the interview was for you? It is right. I think it was fun. I think it was fun to talk about social media with the person. Unknown 17:07 I liked it. Was there any part of the interview or any questions that made you feel uncomfortable? Not really are anything that I should change or the topics that I asked you? I don't think so. Unknown 17:19 Okay, do you have any recommendations of any questions that you think is important for me to include that I might have missed? thing you have covered? Pretty much it but you should I think you should put a question like what do you use pin? I mean like I wanted to say is it is the social media a good for you think or a bad for you think? Like I think that was not clear, but I might have missed that one. Okay, thank you for the recommendations and I'm so grateful for the time that we spent. Unknown 17:56 Thank you
