WEEK 7 - Overview

In Week Eight we will be exploring Listening!  I have a fun activity for you this time.  So have fun.  It is one of my favorites.  I look forward to your reactions.

Listening is the communication skill we spend the most time doing in life but receive the least training on how to do effectively.  It is a shame, because listening is so important.  Think about it.  We all want people in our life that we can talk to----translation---we all want someone who will listen to us!  Growing up we wanted our parents to really listen to us, and in turn, they wanted us to listen to them.  Employers want employees who listen and employees want bosses that listen. Finally we will learn some strategies to make us more effective listeners!

As always we have a chapter to read, a quiz to take, a journal to write and a Discussion to participate in. Enjoy!

NOTE: If you have not made arrangements to see the movie "Gung Ho" (starring Michael Keaton) please do so!

WEEK 7 - Journal Assignment: Chapter 7

Instructions: (PAGE NUMBER FOR ENTRY ONE IS REQUIRED. POINTS WILL BE DEDUCTED)

The Reflective Journal Assignment will help you in developing your interpersonal skills in this course. Literature on personal development suggests that reflective writing about yourself and your interpersonal experiences supports the integration of new learning.

You are expected to keep a journal, writing two entries each Module. Your entries should be written as follows:

1. Entry one will consist of a response to “ self-reflection” questions posed in the textbook - Reflect & Relate: An Introduction to Interpersonal Communication. Each chapter contain several of these boxes. You are encouraged to choose the self-reflection box that is most important to understanding your interpersonal attitudes and skills. Provide the entire set of questions and the page number of the Self-Reflection you have chosen.

2. A second entry should respond to the journal prompt posted by your instructor (see below). These prompts ask you to reflect on a particular aspect of the topic under study for the module. Please type in the entire journal prompt before answer the questions.

Requirements:

· Write two different entries each module. (that means both from above!)

· Entries should be double-spaced and in 12 font that is easy to read.

· Use an informal tone, but observe conventions of good grammar and spelling. (Use spell check)

· Each entry will be at least one to two paragraphs in length. (A paragraph is five to seven well-developed sentences.)

· A Sample Document has been attached to assist you in setting up your journal.

Submission:

· You may complete the entries using the sample document to help you set everything up.

· Save your document to your computer using your first initial, last name and module number.  For example, my journal for Module 2 would be RLeber 2.  For Module 3 the file would be named RLeber 3. All others would be named as appropriate.

· Then attach your file.  Click on Submit Assignment to the left.  Find your file and attach.

Chapter 7

What is one situation, relationship, or subject in your life when you are prone to ineffective listening? What is one idea from the chapter that you can apply to prevent or overcome your ineffective listening in this particular circumstance?

WEEK 7 - Activity: Speaking by the Book (Requires an adult partner)

Instructions:

(Estimated time for completion: 30-50 minutes)

"Speaking by the Book" has made a big difference in my relationships.  Try it for fun. (It is harder than you might think). Or try it for real. I find this exercise very useful when my teenage kids feel like I am not really listening to them. It can also be used for everyday conversation such as spouses sharing their day.

Here are the rules:  (Read and follow these directions carefully.)

1. You will need to find an adult partner for this exercise.  It can be a friend or family member.  Only one partner.  This is not a group activity.

2. You will need a book (or substitute an item of your choice i.e. water bottle, spoon, etc).  Any shape or size. Please note, you will not be reading from the book.

3. You and your partner must be in the same room, seated across from each other. (No SKYPE, etc.)  Remove distractions such as your phone, the TV or anything else that will draw your focus.

4. One of you are to hold the book.  As long as you are holding the book, you MUST talk.  Your partner may not interrupt you or take the book away.  The partner without the book is just to listen,  No "uh huh" or "oh", just listen.

5. Once you have "had your say", you may give the book to the other person.  Your partner may not "ask" for the book either verbally or non-verbally.

6. Once you give the book away, you must listen.  The same rules apply.

7. Continue talking and listening to each other, PASSING THE BOOK BACK AND FORTH, for at least 10 minutes. "Speak by the book" until it is no longer needed.  NOTE: You are taking turns speaking for at total of 10 minutes (or more!)  DO NOT have each person talk for 10 minutes---that's a speech!

In an attached file, tell me in 2-3 paragraphs about your experience.  Who did you talk to? When? Where? How did you feel?  Fun? Frustrating? Useful? Hard? Potentially helpful? Will you try it again? Get your partners reaction as well.

WEEK 7 - Discussion Board: Cell Phones

Discussions should be about your thoughts. Use of sources is not expected (POINTS WILL BE TAKEN)

The use of cell phones in public places is widespread. When have you been standing behind someone in line, or waiting in a public place, or in an elevator, and could hear every detail of a person's conversation?  According to the textbook, eavesdropping is a type of ineffective listening.  Does hearing another person's cell phone conversation constitute eavesdropping? Are you being unethical? Is it appropriate to conduct personal telephone conversations in close proximity to others?  How do you feel about this behavior?  Are you guility of this behavior?

Recall that Discussion Board assignments are designed to help you implement effective interpersonal behaviors and skills. Please make your own comments first and then build on at least three of the comments of your classmates.  Work for at least 3 well-developed sentences in each response.
