Journal 3

Interculturalcommunication.docx

Activity:

1. The textbook has provided several examples of how people in different cultures may have different behaviors when greeting each other. For this assignment, you will interview people from TWO different cultures (Chinese, Japanese, France, English cultures; you can also include cultures that may be considered subcultures, such as African American male teenagers’ greeting rituals, Amish culture). [Since we’ve covered the male-female communication, I’d like you to not to use male vs. female as cultures if you can]

2. Interview people from two different cultures about how do they usually greet each other. If you are unable to do the differences, you can use online research to complete this assignment. Make sure you bring the list with you, you will have to answer these questions in the journal.

· Are there different types of greeting behaviors? what are they? [Generally speaking, there are various ways of greeting in a single culture, try to be as thorough/detailed as you can. You want to be MORE detailed than the table showed in the reading]

· What are the variables/factors that may influence a person to decide which behavior they should adopt?

· Do these different greeting behaviors signal/imply different information about the participants’ identities and relationships?

· What would happen if a person fails to “greet” another person in a culturally appropriate way? (problems for identity management, social sanctions, etc.)

· Based on your identity, what would be the best way to greet people from that particular culture?

Journal Write-up: Requirements

1. Use the first paragraph to provide background information: what were the cultures chosen? Who are the participants and why would they be informants for this assignment? [If you are using online sources, be sure to include all sources to avoid plagiarism charges]

2. Report your findings of the answers to questions/interviews in a systematic/structured way. Make sure that your arguments are easy to read. Feel free to compare and contrast the two cultures you interviewed (and/or add your own cultural view if it seems fit).

3. Provide your commentary/analysis if you found something interesting, unusual, or unexpected. [The more, the better.]

4. The journal should be a well-organized, 2-3-page, short essay (rather than casual, informal writing).
