Interaction Project Topic

The Interaction Project gives students an opportunity to interact with some component of

government and then analyze the experience. For this interaction project, I have chosen to attend

a local government body meeting. I will be attending the Lamar School District Re-2 school

board meeting. The meeting is on Monday February 12, 2018 at 210 West Pearl Street. The

meeting will start at 6:30 p.m. and during the meeting I will be listening and taking notes.

I hope to identify the issues that are being dealt with by the school board and gather

information on the community’s immediate concerns. I believe an effective way to begin to

impact the way that we live, work and pay taxes begins with our involvement in local

government. Education is a main concern as it deals with our children’s intellectual welfare and

is sometimes an indicator of how the community sees itself.

I am choosing this activity because I hope to gain knowledge about how our school board

goes about making decisions that affect me and my school. This will help me better understand

how and why they make the decisions that they do. I believe that if there is any decision making

occurring, it is important to be involved and to let your opinion be heard. I am only a junior in

high school, but I have always wondered about the decisions made concerning my school, and I

believe it's important to know how the decisions are made. Someday I might have kids go to the

same school and I think this will be a valuable experience for me to see how official meetings

take place and see the procedures that they follow. After seeing how the school board meeting is

conducted, hopefully it will inspire me to become more politically active in my future.
