(C1) The idea of ethnic conflict has been around for a long time, but it is just now coming to the forefront of conversations around the world. Ethnic conflict can lead to issues such as genocide and are happening in countries with high rates of poverty.
(D1) According to Mariana Tepfenhart who wrote the article “The Causes of Ethnic Conflicts”, “Ethnic conflicts are not new phenomena. Such conflicts have existed all over the world
for centuries…” She continues by stating that “…but in the last 20 years, after the fall of Communism, they are in the focus of public attention due to the war in Rwanda, the events in Eastern Europe, and the disintegration of the former Soviet Union” (Tepfenhart 84).
(W1) Tepfenhart comments that ethnic conflicts have been going on for much longer than we may realize. Certainly, the ethnic conflicts that occurred previous to the last 20 years, according to Tepfenhart, were not any less important than the conflicts that occurred more recently, but it seems that more attention and emphasis has been placed on these new conflicts. The common denominators in the countries with these problems seem to be: 1. The fall of communism and 2. poverty.
