Statistics assignment wk12.
PART #1
1. Read the attached chapter (10) in order to understand the topic and be able to do the assignment.
2. Listen to the following link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ugd4k3dC_8Y
3. The students in your school take reading and math benchmarks tests prior to taking the reading and math SOLs. These benchmarks are designed to assess the students’ readiness to take the SOLs. Typically, students who score between 80 and 100 on a benchmark test are expected to do well on the associated SOL. Your principal has tasked you with assessing whether or not theses benchmarks are doing a good job predicting students’ success on the SOL. You have been given the data in the Table below to utilize to make your recommendations.
Students Reading Benchmark Math
Benchmark Math SOL Reading SOL
John 98 71 454 500
Sally 95 77 475 490
Preston 91 78 489 550
Alex 89 79 495 500
Ann 88 81 510 565
Elizabeth 85 82 525 580
Crystal 84 84 530 550
Bob 81 86 553 554
Janet 79 87 575 599
Sue 75 89 580 570
Mike 74 92 598 600
Ryan 74 95 600 600
(Note: An EXCEL containing the data in the table above is (attached).
a. Using the test score data in the table above, create 2 scatter plots with the following pairs of test scores:
1. Scatter Plot A: Reading Benchmark on the x-axis and Reading SOL on the y- axis
2. Scatter Plot B: Math Benchmark on the x-axis and Math SOL on the y-axis
b. For each of the scatter plots (A and B) comment on whether or not it looks like a general linear relationship and if it is positive or negative.
c. Using EXCEL calculate the correlations associated with each scatter plot. For scatter plots A and B address the following question: Do the values and sign (positive or negative) make sense based on your scatter plot? (Note: Directions for computing correlation in EXCEL are on p. 210 in the Utts text.) (attached)
d. Using the information you gather completing parts a., b., and c., answer the following questions:
1. Does performing well on the Reading Benchmark signal that the students will in general do well on the Reading SOL? Please explain.
2. Does performing well on the Math Benchmark signal that the students will in general do well on the Math SOL? Please explain.
3. What recommendations will you make to your principal?
