InstructionsMonograph.1-13.docx

Part 1 Title of your proposal

Please use the font (letter style) to Arial size 12 or Calibri size 12 for the entire monograph, double spaced.

Enter the title of your proposal, changing the title when the professor authorizes the change

Note: if you see the word "proposal" in the assignments, it should be changed to "monograph". (You can indicate this change to the professor)

Once you turn in a part of the monograph, the professor has to grade it before you can continue to the next part. Feel free to send a text to your professor (787.526.4963) to indicate that he needs to grade the latest part.

Part 2 Submit one bibliographic reference:

Please use either the font (letter style) Arial size 12 or Calibri for the entire monograph, double spaced.

Submit one article in APA bibliographic style, APA practice with less than 7 authors.

Example (read carefully, because each space matters)

Author, A. A., Author, B. B., & Author, C. C. (year). Title of article. Title of Periodical, xx(xx), pp-pp. doi:xx.xxxxxxxxxx

Example:

Zhao, C. S., Min, X., & Li, C. G. (2014). Affecting factors related to air pollution on elderly respiratory health during heating period. Advanced Materials Research, 6(3), 919-923. doi:10.1155l2015l236143

Make sure to include each element, including:

Each of the authors, placing them in the same order of the journal article

Include a space between the initials of the author.

Include the "&", not "and".

Put the date in parentheses

Use sentence case in the title (only capitalizing the proper words)

Italicize the source of the publication (the " revista")

Italicize the volume number

Place the issue number in parenthesis, but do not italicize the issue number.

Put the range of page number, but do not put "pp.".

Note: you can include the "doi" number, but it is not essential for this assignment

Note 2: Remember that all references are required to be from 2011 until 2017.

Note 3: If there are two authors, use a comma after the initials of the first author:

Author, A. A., & Author, B. B., (year). Title of article. Title of Periodical, xx(xx), pp-pp. doi:xx.xxxxxxxxxx

Note: a practical way of doing the references is to copy the reference so it will be easy to return to it to check details later..

Part 3 Template for monograph

Submit the template as a Microsoft Word attachment

Part 4. Arrange reference with hanging indent

Take the reference that you completed in Part 3 place this reference in your TEMPLATE immediately below "5. Literature cited" in the approved template, arranging this reference (and others if you wish) using the hanging indent.

(see the video concerning "Hanging indent", https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yCStrefoSCU

Unfortunately, the professor cannot indicate to you in Moodle how the reference will look with a hanging indent. If you have problems, the professor can show you how to do this in class

Part 5 Literature cited: 15 scientific, peer-reviewed articles

Submit 15 references in APA style, in ALPHABETICAL  in the original language such as Spanish order by author, added to your template, each during the last 5 years. Do not number the references. Use hanging indent (sangría) as stipulated by the professor.

Submit this assignment as part of your approved template. Thus, you will begin to submit the template for several assignments. (In reality, you are working on toward the full proposal)

Use the hanging indent (see the video concerning "Hanging indent", https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2isPBlRk048)

APA style is required.

Note that you must put ALL of the authors, but more than 7 authors uses a special style:

From Profesora Madeline Nazario Lugo:

(PLEASE MAKE SURE TO USE ITALICS FOR ALL GENUS AND SPECIES NAMES: i.e. Homo sapiens)

Make sure to check which name is the "apellido" in when forming the reference.

Remember that all references are required to be from 2010 until 2016.

Note: a practical way of doing the references is to copy the reference so it will be easy to return to it to check details later..

Part 6 Annotations for each of 15 peer-reviewed references

Add 3 to 4 sentences in English ("annotations", which will later be used in the Literature review) in the monograph.

It is important that if this will be one of the methodologies that you label it "Methodology" and then summarize the methodology that you will use in your monograph.

For instance, for the "Methodology"

Methodology: The most efficient knee repair is to simply replace it with Model 45c Chevron "instant knee", which is available year-round. However, this is the most expensive method.

For now, use the template with the 15 references (sent to you by email) and add the 3 to 4 sentences between each reference in the literature cited. (See the attachment which will serve as an example. Note that the example only has two references with annotations.) You must use annotations for peer-review journal references only for  15 references. Some of the references can be the same references as others in your group.

Thus, you will submit the same template using the same Microsoft Word document which has been corrected previously by the professor.

Note: if the article is in Spanish, you must annotate the reference in English (maybe consider using Google Translate if you have problems).

After the professor makes suggested edits, either "accept changes" or "reject edits" under "Review".

Always cite the authors somewhere within the annotation, at least once within the sentences:

Always indicate what the research found. (They found..., They proved that..., Their research indicated that...)

Example of up to 5 authors cited within the context of the sentence:

Albert, Heard, and Hoyte (2013) compared the effects of caffeine consumed by tea, coffee, or soda drinks in combination with imbibing alcohol mixed with energy drinks in adolescents of ages 16 and 17 years. The concentration of caffeine in  normal drinks was the promotor of those adolescents to be drunk more easily than others adolescents. They found that the caffeine in the drinks stimulated their reaction time.

Example of authors cited within parentheses, for up to 5 authors:

Researchers compared the effects of caffeine consumed by tea, coffee, or soda drinks in combination with imbibing alcohol mixed with energy drinks in adolescents of ages 16 and 17 years (Albert, Heard, & Hoyte, 2013). They found that the concentration of caffeine in normal drinks was the promotor of those adolescent to be drunk more easily than others adolescents.

Examples, more than 5 authors:

Anoopkumar et al. (2015) compared the energy drink brand Red Bull with a non-caffeine drink for athletes involved in cycling, indicating that a moderate amount of caffeine is beneficial for the sport. They found that the non-caffeine drinks resulted in poorer performance.

Researchers compared the energy drink brand Red Bull with a non-caffeine drink for athletes involved in cycling, indicating that a moderate amount of caffeine is beneficial for the sport (Anoopkumar et al., 2015). They found that the non-caffeine drinks resulted in poorer performance.

Wrong:

Herrera-Espiñeira, Escobar, Navarro-Espigares, de Dios Luna del Castillo, García-Pérez, and Godoy-Montijano (2013) The purpose  is to determine (incorrect subject)

Correct:

Herrera-Espiñeira, Escobar, Navarro-Espigares, de Dios Luna del Castillo, García-Pérez, and Godoy-Montijano (2013)  determined (the citation is the subject of the sentence)

Part 7. Introduction & Literature review

Open the updated template for this part

· Use the template (remember that the entire monograph will be in English, ranging in length from 7 to 15 pages, exclusive of title page and the references)

· Thus you will add to the template

· Use a page break after the first page (title page), but please do not use page breaks for 1. Title, 2, Introduction, 3. Literature review, or Methodology (but yes, there is still a page break after the end of the methodology)

· Introduction (more or less 300 words for the introduction,

· Justification

· Research question

· General objective

· One (or 2) sentences: history

· One (or 2) sentences: current status

· One (or 2) sentences: problem

· One (or 2) sentences: research hypothesis

· General objective(s)

· Specific objective(s)

· Four sentences: current methodologies

· APA style citation of references (if any)

· Literature review (no more than 700 words, please)

· Arrange the material from the annotations with the general first (definitions, etc), and work toward the specific, with the last entry referring to work that you are modeling your methodology on

· Write paragraphs in English

· Annotations used as source of literature review

· Erase each annotation from the "5. Literature cited"

· Write coherent paragraphs from information by incorporating the annotations

· Paragraphs must flow

· Avoid (mostly) words of transition (if you use them, consider "thus", "because" (instead of "due to" or "due to the fact that"), "otherwise" (instead of "on the other hand", "to" instead of "in order to")

· Make elements parallel in a series

· Use the comma before the "and" in a series (eggs, toast, ham, and eggs)."

· Use commas for introductory clauses

· Additional information can be used, but must be cited in the literature cited

· Do not justify the margins (use align left)

· Cite each reference using APA style

· Note that in the final monograph, each reference in the reference list must be cited in the text; and each reference in the text must be cited in the literature cited.

Please make sure to REMOVE  the annotations between each of the references in the Literature Cited section

Please also remember to CITE EACH REFERENCE in the text (body of the proposal, such as in the Introduction and the Literature review:

One author: (Walker, 2007); two authors (Walker & Allen, 2004); three authors (Bradley, Ramírez, & Soo, 1999); four authors (Bradley, Ramírez, Soo & Walsh, 2006); five authors (Walker, Allen, Bradley, Ramírez, & Soo, 2008); six or more authors (Wasserstein et al., 2005); Group (readily identified through abbreviation) as authors (National Institute of Mental Health [NIMH], 2003); Group (no abbreviation) as authors (University of Pittsburg, 2005)

Two Authors: Always cite both authors' names in-text everytime you reference them. Example: Johnson and Smith (2009) found...

Six 6 or more authors: If a document has six or more authors, simply provide the last name of the first author, followed by "et al." from the first citation to the last.

Example:

I have identified what activities are best suited to produce the relevant benefits in terms of health, promoting regulation of metabolic processes, and adaptation to these activities to ensure the prevention and treatment of diseases (Romero, 2003).

Because of the difficulty to ensure that the patients had appendicitis, Blakely et al. (2011) studied children under 18 years old in randomized trials for the clinical diagnosis of perforated appendicitis.

Because of the difficulty to ensure that the patient had appendicitis, research has been focused on children under 18 years old in randomized trials for the clinical diagnosis of perforated appendicitis (Blakely et al., 2011).

Part 8. Methodology

Within your references, methodology is an important component. Make sure to indicate to compare and contrast different methodologies.

Using the references, please indicate as many of these topics as possible.

Treatment

Sampling

Apparatus Instrument

Procedures

Statistical analysis

Most expensive

Lease expensive

Most effective

Most cost-effective

If applicable, the time for a patient to recover

Example:

The following methodology is based in the methodology used by Soler-Lopez , Gomez – Gomez, & Rodriguez-Martinez (2005), with modifications for this research.

Sampling

They took four water samples with a 4-L plankton net from the hypersaline lagoon in Punta Cucharas in Ponce, Puerto Rico, daily for a week. consisting of a compilation of samples from the lagoon Salinas, Punta Cucharas in Ponce, Puerto Rico. Phytoplankton and zooplankton concentrations were monitored for a week; they did not apply anything to alter or kill the microorganisms. The concentrations were separated for the comparison of the ratio of the protozoa group # 1 and ratio of the phytoplankton group # 2 and were monitored for new species.

Statistical analysis(do not include statistical analyses in your monograph; just put generally what the researchers found)

Use the files below as reference material.

Part 9. Abstract

Function: An abstract summarizes, in one paragraph (200 to 300 words maximum), the major aspects of the entire paper in the following prescribed sequence:

· the question(s) you will investigate (or purpose), (from Introduction or objectives)

· state the purpose very clearly in the first or second sentence.

· the experimental design and methods used, (from Methodology)

· clearly express the basic design of the study.

· Name or describe or compare and contrast each methodology

Include as many numbers as possible, especially for the methodology. Do not cite any references  within the abstract.

Submit the attachment as a Microsoft Word File (with 25 points subtracted for any other format)

Part 10 Count: 15 references cited in body and in literature cited

This is an intermediate step before you submit the final proposal.

You must count all 15 references that are listed in the literature cited and cited within the body of the proposal, making sure that each is cited.

Each of the 15 references cited within the proposal must be listed in the reference list (of 15 references).

Part 11. Final monograph

Turn in your complete monograph (in English)

The entire monograph should be double spaced using the fonts Arial size 12 or Calibri size 12. Note that Times New Roman will not be accepted. There should be no more than two horizontal spaces between paragraphs and sections, Within the body of the monograph (after the abstract until before the literature cited), there should not be page breaks between sections.

The final grade for the monograph, which will be 25% of the grade will be determined by how many parts you completed. If you competed part 4, you will receive some points. Thus, if you SUBMIT your monograph (whatever you have finished), you will be assigned some points.

If you add pictures or illustrations, you may need to compress your files. Either use the technique I showed you in class (click on the illustration, format, compress pictures) or use this video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V8V_D346GWc)

Part 12. Submit your "presentation letter" (for job, based on your monograph)

· Prepare your presentation letter, in SPANISH OR ENGLISH.
