Instructions for the Major Paper Assignment

Major Paper – due Nov. 11th 2022

Your major will in part come from the Week One lesson. However other lessons will be incorporated as you work on the paper.

Last week we were introduced to the definition of leadership from a communication perspective. The communication perspective of leadership focuses on the communication style of the leader as the defining attribute of the leader. Johnson and Hackman (2018)’s four primary definitional themes of leadership describe the leader according to who the leader is (the trait theory); how the leader acts in situations (situational leadership); the influence of the leader on others (transformational leadership); and how the leader collaborates with followers (servant leadership). Please note that while there are other leadership styles beyond these four, Johnson and Hackman (2018) take these four as broad categories which encompass distinct styles.

For your Research Paper you need to research on servant leadership OR any one of the four definitional themes of leadership, (trait leadership; situational leadership; transformational leadership) and write an 8-10- page paper.

Please make sure your paper covers the following:

1. A clear definition of the leadership style that you have chosen - please find different literature sources, such as books, or journal articles from which to find definitions. From the definitions that you include in your paper, select the one which you think best describes the leadership style that you have selected.

2. A description of this leadership style in detail, - again, use several literature sources.

3. Inclusion of a theory which best explains this leadership style - please use the leadership theories which are in the course textbook.

4. An identification of an individual who best embodies this leadership style – explain the specific attributes of this person, or actions which justify your application of this leadership style on this individual

Your paper should be 8 - 10 pages long . It should be written as a college paper; meaning that it should be double spaced, spell-checked, with correct grammar. It should include 5-7 academic citations sources and should be formatted using APA 7TH edition.

Here is a suggestion of the timeline which you could follow, to make sure that you complete your major paper on time.

Week Two Sept. 17 - 23 Think of the leadership style that you want to focus on, (select from the trait, situational, transformational or servant leadership styles). You just need to select one. You can start researching on this leadership style during this period.

Week Four: Oct. 1 -7 Select the theory which you want to use to explain the leadership style that you have selected. Include this theory in your Week Four Discussion Board.

Weeks Five: Oct. 8 -14 Write your full paper as and when you find time.

Remember this will be an ongoing process in the background, while you still have to complete

other two papers and the discussion board assignments.
