Instructions for Term Project ANT 217: Culture and Consumption Fall 2018 Purpose: The purpose of this assignment is for the student to examine how others consume a particular good, and analyze this consumption for patterns in terms of the cultural meanings that they express. Due Date: Tuesday, December 11, 2018 at 11:30 PM Weight Towards Final Grade: 15% Instructions: This assignment is going to be based on your ethnographic observations, so you need to choose a good to study whose consumption you will have relatively easy access. 1) Choose a good to study; 2) Identify a site where you can observe the consumption of this good; 3) Each individual should observe the consumption of the good for at least two (2)
hours; 4) Each individual should interview 2 to 3 individuals about their consumption of this
good; among the goals of each interview should be: a. Relative demographic data b. How long have they been consuming this good? c. How did they begin to consume this good, how were they introduced to it? d. Why do they consume this good? e. Do they know others who consume this good? If so, and if relevant, do they
consume this good with others? f. Would they be willing to stop consuming this good? Why or why not? g. If they could consume something other than this good, what would it be
(substitution or up-grading)?
5) Based upon the data that you have gathered, you need to create a report that: a. Briefly describe the good that you have studied; b. Briefly describe the site of your observational study; c. Briefly describe the individuals that you have interviewed (please use
appropriate pseudonyms for all individuals); d. In some detail, discuss patterns you have found in your data;

e. In some detail, analyze the patterns that you have found in the data. The analysis should explicitly draw upon the theorists studied at the beginning of the semester, and the ethnographies that we have read, as appropriate;
f. Briefly, discuss what conclusions can be drawn from your analysis. The report should be single spaced with double spaces between paragraphs. The report should use a consistent style of headers and citations, as appropriate. Anthropology majors/minors must utilize the style sheet of the American Anthropologist. Other students may chose between either American Anthropologist or APA (latest edition). Anthropology majors who might want to used this paper for their Senior Portfolio are reminded that the paper must be at least equal to 5 double spaced pages. NO LATE PAPERS WILL BE ACCEPTED
