INSTRUCTIONS FOR IAT HOMEWORK

Purpose: To test yourself for an unconscious negative attitude

Assigned: Saturday, April 21

Due Date: By 11:59 p.m. Sunday, April 29

Points: 20

Length: 2 pages, double-spaced

The purpose of this week's homework is to test yourself to see if you have an implicit (unconscious) belief that people with mental illnesses are violent. You will participate in an online test called an "Implicit Association Test" or "IAT" for short.

Note: It will take you a good 20 minutes to complete the online IAT, so budget your time accordingly. Since this homework involves more work than other homework assignments, it is worth 20 points.

Here are the instructions:

1. Create a Word document. You are going to be cutting and pasting something into this document in a later step.

2. At the top of the Word document, put your name, “IAT Homework” and the date.

3. Save your Word document.

4. Go to https://implicit.harvard.edu/implicit/user/pimh/selectastudy.html (Either cut and paste, or else type, the link into your browser.)

5. Click on the link that says “Click here to discover your hidden thoughts about a range of mental health topics.”

6. Read the Preliminary Information, then click “I wish to proceed”

7. Click “Mental Illness IAT: Do You Implicitly Think that People with Mental Illness are Dangerous?”

8. If you see the green checkmark, click on “Click Here to Begin” (if you don’t see the green checkmark, click on “If not, click here,” then follow the instructions)

9. Read the Informed Consent page, enter your age at the bottom and click Continue.

10. Follow the instructions on the next several screens.

11. When you come to the screen entitled “You have completed the Mental Illness Implicit Association Test (IAT),” click “Click here to see your results.”

12. IMPORTANT – DO THIS RIGHT AWAY, OR YOU MAY LOSE YOUR RESULTS!! Cut and past the material from the top of the page down to “Please take a moment and answer the following questions” and paste the material into your Word document. Be sure to save the Word document again!

13. Then answer the questions that follow on the website until you get to the page that says “Thank you for Completing our Study.

14. At the end of your Results in the Word document, answer the following questions (2 paragraphs, double-spaced, per answer). Don’t number your responses; write this more as an essay. Use a Times New Roman 12 font, with 1-inch margins and left justification.

1. What were the results of your test?

2. Do you agree with the results of your test?

3. Briefly explain why you agree (or disagree) with the results of your test.

15. Upload the Word document to the TurnItIn area “IAT HW” upload area in the current week’s Module sometime before midnight of Sunday, April 29. (For instructions on uploading to that TurnItIn area, please see “How to Submit a TurnItIn Assignment in Canvas” in the Resources for Our Course module.)
