Advanced Accounting Social Responsibility Case
Social Roles & Responsibility Case
See the tab "Case Application Tools & Specs" for detailed information about roles and expectations and a guide for how to prepare for cases.
The case that will be used for this Professional Identity theme is HOP COMPOST: Maintaining Environmental Accountability with Growth
(see the course package in Ivey Business Cases - info about how to access these cases is detailed under the tab "Case Application Tools & Specs")
Requirements:
We've addressed issues of professional identity (expectations, inside vs external to the profession viewpoints) and ethics (where we've touched on legal vs ethical responsibilities and looked at a range of ethical frameworks). In addition the readings and discussion on CSR/ Sustainability and Integrated Reporting will pick up on types of reporting, what it addresses and who has a role in the public reporting.
Side A: How do current accounting practices and reporting standards limit Corporate Social Responsibility / Sustainability reporting, and particularly HOP Compost from potentially attracting investors, R&D capital, and government funding? Are there ways that traditional or existing public accounting methods/ practices and standards (financial reporting) could be used to support HOP Compost?
What points of argument would (or could) be used to suggest that CPAs NOT play a role in the CSR/ Sustainability arguments that HOP Compost might like to make?
Side B:
-How might CPAs play a nontraditional role (outside of existing financial reporting standards) in supporting companies like HOP Compost to help them achieve objectives to achieve a more sustainable mining industry? What would that look like - what steps/ processes/ practices might public accountants play in supporting greater sustainability?
-What points of argument would (or could) be used to suggest that CPAs MUST play a role in the CSR/ Sustainability arguments that HOP Compost might like to make?
