For most purposes of this class you’ll be using the Article Databases to search for an article on a given topic. We will demonstrate in this guide one such search. The topic will be “RFID use on animals”.

Start by clicking on the “Article & Databases” link

Let’s assume that we don’t have a clue on which database to pick from the many databases provided:

We’ll pick

Now enter the topic in the search box

Notice that I have checked “Search All” as I don’t know which database may contain this info.

Click the Search button… and wait for the search results to be loaded: 6 pages full of 909 articles return.

So we have an ample choice of articles to scan through to find an attractive article that interests us. However, remember that we look for current or fairly recent articles – criteria is typically published year 2007-2010, an article with full text – not just abstracts, and relevant to the search topic.

The second one looks interesting…

Click on the link. This returns the details of the article information: summary, metadata, etc… and link to the full text to show us the article itself:

Click on to see the citation format:

And how nice they even give us the appropriate format of the reference in APA!!!

Click on Link to full text to get to the article – we’re almost there…

Then finally click on the Full Text on the right to see the article itself:

And there we have it

Is this 2010 article relevant to the topic? Well under the “Anatomical and Biological Biometrics” (Section 7), we find the following:

“… more recently it has been used by the beef industry for animal tracking. Retinal scanning is being used to identify individual animals from birth with a view to improving food safety and disease control.” (Moradoff, 2010, sec. 7).

So, we can conclude perhaps we can use this article…
