Argument Research Essay

Create your outline and send it as an individual doc. In an argumentative essay you must take a strong stance. That is, you must pick a side for or against someone or something. You cannot be in the middle (undecided).

This 3-4-page research essay must be written in APA format. Use Times New Roman , 12 pt. font and double space your work. You must also use level 1 & 2 headings and have a reference page for your in-text citations. You need at least 2 research resources.

Your assignment is to write an argumentative essay about a controversial topic from the third-person perspective.

Topic Options:

· To be a politician: art or a born talent.

· Do you believe in alternative medicine?

· Homeschooling: pros and cons.

· A human: evolution or God’s plan?

Whichever topic you select, ensure that the title of your essay is appropriate to an argument. The topic and thesis statement should share some of the same words or ideas. The thesis must be the last sentence of the introduction. The thesis statement must clearly explain the argument. The rest of the essay will support the thesis.

Make sure that your evidence is supporting a claim / thesis that you made (and not the other way around). It is necessary to read about a topic first and come to a conclusion later. If you try to get your thesis statement to fit the research, then it may not work out as neatly as you think. As you learn more, you discover more (and the outcome may not be what you originally thought).

Concession / Rebuttal and Counterargument: This is the paragraph directly before the conclusion of the essay. In the concession, you must admit that you understand the point-of-view(s) of those who oppose you. In the counterargument, you will explain why your point-of-view of more reasonable and therefore, correct. Use your logic and research in the counterargument.

You cannot argue about something that is true or factual, nor can you argue about something that has a "yes" or "no" answer. The topic must be debatable. You must use:

logos: logical appeal

ethos: ethical appeal

pathos: emotional appeal

ARGUMENTATIVE THESIS STATEMENT EXAMPLES

Topic: Is it Necessary to Attend A University?

A university degree provides invaluable life lessons and help with a future career, but not every high school student should be encouraged to attend a university directly after graduation; some students may benefit from a "gap year" where they can think more intently about what they want to do for a career and how they can accomplish it.

Topic: The Values of Studying Abroad

Studying abroad is one of the most culturally valuable experiences a college student can have, as it is the only way to be completely immersed in another language and learn about other cultures and countries.

Topic: The Media, Models and Women's Body Images

Social media and magazines have done a lot to include a more diverse group of models within the last ten years, but there is still a long way to go to promote a healthy woman's body image.

Topic: The Unfairness of Cigarette Taxes

Heavily taxing and increasing the price of cigarettes is essentially a tax on the poorest Americans, and it doesn't deter them from purchasing; instead, the state and federal governments should target those economically disenfranchised with early education about the dangers of smoking.

Plagiarized work will receive a failing grade.
