Annotated Bibliography: Compile a five-six page annotated bibliography of selected criticism on one of the works or authors on the syllabus. The bibliography should conform to MLA style and include at least four secondary sources. Each entry should consist of a concise but thorough descriptive summary followed by a well-developed paragraph or two of commentary reflecting your opinion of the source’s usefulness and value. You might explain what you found helpful or interesting about the piece, whether you would recommend the source to a fellow student and why. You might discuss the critical approach that underlies the critic’s argument and any flaws or shortcomings in the source. You might point out how the source differs from other entries in the bibliography. The bibliography should include critical articles from scholarly journals, chapters from scholarly books, or the equivalent. Study guides such as Sparknotes and on-line study guides are not suitable. If you are in doubt about whether a source is acceptable, check with me. Format the bibliography according to the model distributed in class. For matters of MLA form check the appropriate section of a writing text or consult the help features on the Hamersly Library web site. OWL, the web site of the Purdue University Writing Center, has helpful advice about compiling an annotated bibliography. A complete draft is due Tuesday, June 4 for in-class peer review. Final draft due on Thursday, June 6.
