Instructions: Your mid-term exam is comprised of three essay-style questions. Answer any three of the four essay questions. There is no minimum/maximum length requirement; however, answers should be thorough and address all aspects of the question. You will need only your textbook, and the articles discussed thus far in the course to complete the exam.
Grading: 100 possible points Grading breakdown: • Content, evidence, & strength of overall response (30 points per question) • Structure, grammar, & clarity of responses (10 points total) Due: You have 48 hours to complete this exam and submit it through Blackboard. *Please double check once you submit the exam to ensure that it submitted successfully. Questions: 1. Critically assess U.S. targeted killing policy, enhanced interrogation techniques, or NSA’s domestic ‘mass’ surveillance (section 215 meta-data program). *Choose only one policy. a. What are some of the pros and cons of the policy you have selected? *Make sure to address the controversial aspects of the policy. b. Is the policy effective at combating terrorism? Are there any gaps in knowledge regarding the effectiveness? c. What changes to the policy would you make (if any)? 2. Discuss the nature of America’s terrorist ‘threat’. a. How has each presidential administration viewed the nature of the terrorist threat (e.g. Bush, Obama, & Trump administration)? b. How does the public view the nature of the threat? c. How are lone-wolf/actor terrorists generally different from organized terrorist groups (e.g. Al-Qaeda)? a. How might this affect law enforcement/intelligence collection efforts? 3. How would you define “terrorism” and what are some of its root causes? a. Consider the rise of ‘religious’ terrorism (Ch. 3) and the role U.S. foreign policy (Pape, 2003) b. What do research findings identify as possible ‘predictors’ of terrorism? 4. Discuss U.S. government policy efforts aimed to combat terrorism in the post 9/11 era (e.g. legislation, creation of new agencies/departments, changes in priorities, GWOT, Counter Terrorism spending, etc.). a. Consider changes to both domestic and foreign policies. b. Discuss differences and similarities of the Bush, Obama, and Trump administration’s approach to Counter Terrorism. i. Are their CT approaches radically different or more similar?
