Post reflection #1

COMPOSING YOUR ORIGINAL POST (12 pts; minimum of 500 words):

Welcome to your first of several Reflection Posts.  You will need to do THREE things before writing your post:

1. Read Chapters 3 & 4 of The Leadership Challenge 

2. Watch the following video link:   The Lighthouse Video

3. Take the  SLPI assessment. 

To begin writing your post, choose 'Start A New Thread'.  In the 'subject' line, type "Model the Way".  In the text box answer the following:

Description (What?)

Describe a situation you have experienced while preparing for your service hours OR while serving your first few hours that might relate to the short ‘lighthouse’ video. Briefly explain how your current view of service relates to one of these from the video: the lighthouse keeper, the townspeople, or the ship?  Although relating to this video may be challenging, you are free to be broad in making your connection.

Analysis (So What?)

Chapters 3 & 4 of our text, The Leadership Challenge, discusses one of the exemplary practices of leadership, Model the Way, a term describing how leaders express the shared values and mission of an organization.  For this section, choose one organization you have explored or secured for your service site.  Research this organization and describe its organizational mission and any values you believe are shared by its members.  You are welcome to use information from its website, interviews with its members, or any other materials it makes available to the public. To show evidence that you understand and can apply the reading; cite a passage from chapters 3 or 4 from our text, that would clearly align with your description of your chosen organization's mission and values.  Citing a passage means that you will employ APA guidelines---include the author's names and year of publication from our book.  If you use quotations, you will include a page number.  The Wright State Dunbar Library and the Online Writing Lab (OWL online) offers excellent quick references for how to properly cite in APA.

Application (What Next?)

Describe your final profile from the SLPI (direct? indirect? advocacy? research-based?).  Explain why you agree or disagree with this profile.  When considering your profile, what might be some possible organizations to explore that support your profile? You may include ones that you've already contacted, secured, or ones that you might contact.

· In the 'subject' line, type "Reflection Post [and the number]"

· Create three headings for each paragraph of your post: Description, Analysis, and Application

· Submit your reflection by typing in the ‘Compose’ posting box---NOT as an MS Word attachment

· Reflection posts need to be submitted by the due date and time

· Late submissions will be subject to deductions in grade (see syllabus)

· If you cite a source--like our course text--include a Reference, in APA format, at the end of the post

· Your original post should contain a minimum of 500 words
