My Personal Definition of Writing

Due Date: 4-23

Purpose: When we started our semester together, we discussed your ideas about what writing is and what writing means to you. Your responses at this point were based on your experiences with writing, language, and communication before ENC 1101. Since then, we have explored writing, language, and communication in great detail. We have written in various genres, engaged with others’ ideas and experiences, communicated in digital and print contexts, practiced drafting and revision, and learned to write for particular audiences. As a result, your ideas about writing have certainly evolved, and this final project is an opportunity for you to showcase your current understanding of writing.

Task: You will write a Personal Definition of Writing that incorporates your personal perspectives alongside content from our ENC 1101 course. Your Personal Definition of Writing should consist of at least 4 claims and a 150-word explanation for each claim (at least 700+ words total).

Along with each claim, provide an explanation of at least 150 words that discusses…

· What the claim means,

· At least 2 specific readings or text from our class or examples from your writings that are related to this claim,

· At least 1 specific way we can see this claim in action either within or beyond the classroom, and

· Why the claim is meaningful to you as a writer and/or individual.

Criteria for Success:

This writing project will be evaluated based on the following questions:

· Is each claim stated and explained so that its significance and meaning is easily understood? (20%)

· Does the project provide detailed, in-depth, thoughtful ideas writing, language, and/or communication? (20%)

· Does the project bring in specific and accurate references to ENC 1101 texts to support each claim? (20%)

· Does the student use their own words, ideas, and experiences to support each claim? (20%)

· Does the project meet the word/content requirements? (At least 4 claims, 250 word explanations for each claim) (10%)

· Does the project show evidence of thorough proofreading and editing? (10%)

· What personal writing experiences do you regularly engage with and what purpose/role do they serve in your life? (e.g., social media, diary/journal writing, letter writing, scrapbooking, poetry, etc.)

· What is the role of peer review in the writing process?

· What is the relationship between reading and writing?

· What is the relationship between linguistic diversity and effective communication?

· What do you believe constitutes good or effective writing in the classroom?

· What should be the role of digital writing in the classroom?

· What practices should be central to the writing classroom?

· What do you believe constitutes good or effective writing in your professional life?

· What is the relationship between writing and social action?

· What is the relationship between writing and personal expression?

· How do writers construct ethos/credibility with their audience?

· What is the role of giving, receiving, and responding to feedback in writing?

· What is the importance and purpose of drafting in writing?

· What is the importance and purpose of brainstorming and/or planning in writing?
