Comparative Study of Sensation & Perception

Research/Design Paper

You will randomly receive a topic dealing with one of the senses – hearing, seeing, or smelling, in which you will base your Research/Design paper. This paper will consist of two sections -- a Research Section and a Design Section.

RESEARCH SECTION

You must find six empirical papers (in which experiments were done, not theoretical or position papers) that are dealing with the sense you have. Two of the papers must deal with humans , two papers must deal with a vertebrate animal and two papers must deal with an invertebrate .

Discuss each of these papers in detail. Note: You should have the same animal for your two papers dealing with vertebrate animal and the same animal for your two papers dealing with an invertebrate animal. Also you must compare and contrast the structures used for the sense in the three organisms (human, vertebrate and invertebrate) and the range of that sense in the three organisms.

NOTE

When discussing a paper, in detail, in the Research Section, be sure to answer the following questions.

1. WHAT WAS THE QUESTION?

2. WHAT WAS THE HYPOTHESIS?

3. WHAT WAS THE METHOD?

4. WHAT WERE THE INDEPENDENT AND DEPENDENT VARIABLES?

4. WHAT WERE THE RESULTS?

5. WHAT WAS CONCLUDED?

DESIGN SECTION

For the second part of your paper, closely look at your four papers, in your research section, that don’t deal with humans and then design an experiment that would seek to answer a question that was not addressed or unanswered in one of the papers. Your experiment must contain a question and you must state which study, you reviewed earlier in your Research Section, was the inspiration for your experiment and the subjects used in your experiment should be the same as those in the study that inspired you. You must state your hypothesis , have a method section, and although you will not do the experiment , you should have a result section that contains what you think the results would be. Finally, you should have a conclusion section . For the method section be sure to identify the dependent and independent variables.

This paper should be between 8-12 pages, you must also have a separate reference page. This paper is due on Friday 11.6.20 by 11:59 PM on Blackboard. If you turn it in after 11:59 PM 11.6 but by 11:59 11/7 then 10% will be deducted from your grade. After that it is ZERO.
