lectures may have a light assignment, please also finish that. Thank you! I noted the due date behind each assignment in red. Before you finish the final draft. have to read all the lecture first.

Lecture 1 Lecture Research Resource Guide AND Lecture on Annotated Bibliographies

Our librarian Mary Thomas has created a Research Resource Guide just for our class. Use this

link to guide you through finding articles and other sources. It has a wealth of information and

tips for you.

Research Resource Guide

(Links to an external site.) After you gather 5-8 sources, you will assemble an annotated bibliography, which is a list of citations and notes to books, articles, films, documents and other sources. Each citation is followed by a brief (usually about 100 words) description of source,  evaluation of why it is credible, and application of how you will use the source in your paper. The purpose of the annotation is to inform the reader of the relevance, accuracy, quality and reason for the sources cited. It will also help you keep track of your major ideas and sources. This isn't an essay that you can wing. It will take some planning. And this is your first major step.

First, using the Research Resource Guide

(Links to an external site.)  locate and record citations to books, periodicals, films and documents that may contain useful information and ideas on your topic. Briefly examine and review the actual items. Then choose those works that provide a variety of perspectives on your topic. Narrow it down to 8-10 sources.  You will only need to write annotated bibliography articles for five of your sources.

• Citation in MLA format • Summary 2-3 sentences in your own words summarizing the central theme and scope of

the work.

• Evaluation 2-3 sentences  (a) evaluate the authority or background of the author, (b) comment on the intended audience, (c) compare or contrast this work with another work you have cited.

• Application 1-2 sentences explaining how you’ll use it in your essay. What points will it help you prove? Explain how this work illuminates your bibliographic topic.

Here is a sample entry that is color-coded so you can see the four distinct parts. Color-coding is not required.

Lecture 2 Essay 3 Research Annotated Bibliography

Amber, Jeannine. "The Danger outside." Essence, vol. 43, no. 2, June 2012, pp. 102-107.

EBSCOhost.

This article discusses how the shooting of Trayvon Martin further contributed to the discussion

of racial profiling. He was an upstanding kid who was unjustly murdered by George Zimmerman

for walking in a neighborhood. The murder of Trayvon Martin has a lot to do with the Stand

Your Ground law in Florida. The fear that African American youths and their families must deal

with is also discussed, as it is much more intense than many understand. This information is

valid because the author uses the experience of Trayvon Martin’s mother and her first hand

account of how she felt when this tragedy struck her family. This will help me prove that racial

profiling and laws such as stand your ground, can have devastating consequences for real people.

Lecture 3

Post your best source. Include the full title, author and a link or attach/cut and paste). Ebsco links won't be visible in the discussion post so write out. Explain a reason why you think it is effective for the research paper.  Maybe your source will help someone else. Also add a post if you are looking for a source but are having trouble finding it.

Due 5/26 midnight

Lecture 4

Essay 3 Research Thesis and Topic outline (Due 5/30 midnight)

Now you have chosen a topic( The topic that I chose is “I will be focusing on "On the streets,

walking neighborhoods " since this is what is happening on the daily basis. Also, walking on the

street is our most vulnerable time since we would not be prepared to what will happen to us”.) gathered your research and written annotated bibliography.  So, you know what your sources are

saying about your topic. You might still need to add more or drop some sources, and that's okay.

You don't have to resubmit your annotated bibliography, but do make sure whatever your final

sources that are in your essay are what shows up in your works cited and in text citations. All sources need to be accounted for.

Review your sources and start making a thesis or research question, and 6-7 main points that you think you can prove with your sources. Like shown in the lecture, this outline should go through

a few variations before you submit it. Write in as complete sentences as possible and with specific content. You may use bullets or roman numeral format.  For extra clarity, try to include the type of persuasion technique in each area. See sample below for guidance, but do not copy it. The lecture slides

 (Links to an external site.)

on your research process includes the three versions before this one was finished.

Essay: Research Essay Racial Profiling & Police Use of Force Prompt and Submission

Elijah McClain, a recent victim of police violence in

Aurora, Colorado

Background:

Racial profiling, the use of race or ethnicity as grounds to suspect someone of having committed

an offense, has been used for many years by police, business-owners, and other groups of

authority to make claims of suspected wrongdoing. While citizen videotaping of police force

became newsworthy in 1992 with the Rodney King incident, it has exploded in recent years

because of the proliferation of cellphones with video technology as well as social media.

Personal recording is unearthing a long history of abusive police tactics, particularly those

involving people of color.

Racial profiling can take on many forms and contexts. Some potential areas of research include

police stopping people of color on foot, in cars, or in a particular city or area. Immigrants are

often targeted: Mexican/Latinx, Middle-easterners, and Asians. Profiling and police violence is

also growing on college, high school, middle school, and even elementary school campuses. You

will need to narrow your research to ONE area of racial profiling so that you can go more deeply

into the specifics around this area.  If you have another area not listed above, please let's talk

about it and help guide your research.

We will also carefully review police training, its shortcomings and notable successes to examine

how it influences use of force on the job.

Your Task:

Research one aspect of racial profiling, its origins, causes, legality, ethics and/or consequences.

Discuss the problem. outcomes and potential solutions to and alternatives for racial profiling.

You should deeply analyze the problem both qualitatively and quantitatively and make

recommendations for changes. Be sure to review the lectures (Click it, it is a link) on these issues

before gathering your sources for the essay writing.

Details:

• 8-10 pages or 2,000-2,500 words; in MLA format with a Works Cited page (not counted in the word count)

• Must include concession and/or counter argument

• Minimum five secondary sources, two should be peer reviewed academic journals. Use the  research guide (Links to an external site.)
put together by our librarian Mary Thomas and/or Library tab on Canvas; click on

Articles and Databases. Choose Academic Search Premier. Click on Advanced Search

and Full Text. Then begin your search.

Some general Stats.

In 2015, Washington Post started keeping stats on fatalities at the hand of police  in the US.

Before that no such records were kept. Their website is useful, and I encourage you to review it

thoroughly.  Here are some basic stats from 2019

 (Links to an external site.)

.  They ended their reporting and database at the end of 2019. Mapping Police Violence

 (Links to an external site.)

is another source that you might find helpful.

• 1004 people were killed by police in 2019, an increase from previous years

• California had the highest number 135 or 13% of the nation's total

• 19% or 194 victims had known mental illness

• 41 were unarmed and 26 had toy weapons and 49 were unknown for a total of 11.5%

• 16% were Hispanic, 23% were black and 37% were white (remember as far as percentage of population,16% are Hispanic,  blacks are 14%, and whites are 77% of the overall US

population.  The populations by state vary, of course.

Lecture 6

Research Final Draft Cover Letter (Due 6/8 midnight)

Congratulations! You did it. Please write a few paragraphs telling me about your research and

your writing process. What went well? What are you most proud of? What posed challenges?

How much time did you spend on preparation, drafts, proofreading, and the works cited page?

Talk about any out of class help you received? Who did you see? And what was the most

interesting thing you learned doing this research?
