Women's Role in South and North Korea after the Korea War

Abstract

After the Korea War in 1953, South and North Korea have evolved from a common

cultural and historical base into two very different societies, the social status and roles of women

were radically changed. South Korea follows the Western liberal Modernization perspective and

expects that the process of industrialization will eliminate traditional constraints on women,

change the traditional pattern of sexual division, and thereby foster the liberation of women.

North Korea, on the other hand, follows the Marxist perspective and sees the roots of sexual

inequality lying in the privatization of property. This paper will examine both Korea's policies on

woman issues and the status of women in order to analyze the socialist system's contribution to

the improvement of women's lot in its political system. It also looks to research on the growth of

feminism and woman empowerment in South and North Korea, and how it has been taken by the

society.
