Instrucons Your next timed, informal writing assignment will be from Chapter 7 from our textbook The Brief McGraw-Hill Reader. However, this will be done differently than the other two prior Mc-H assignments.
Instead of doing a summary/analysis of a selected essay for the list below, this will be more like a 1- hour timed in-class essay. Basically, you are to read both essays that are listed inside the box and then follow the instructions below that same box. This will be due by Friday at 11:59pm.
"The Myth of the Latin Woman: I Just Met A Girl Named María " by Judith Ortíz Cofer (251-55)
"The Arab World" by Edward T. Hall (263-70)
Everybody will be assigned to read and write about both essays from Chapter 7 in The Brief McGraw-Hill Reader. This will be available starting Tuesday this week.
The purpose of this assignment is to give you practice in order to prepare for writing essays within a given time limit. Since your Midterm Exam is coming up and it will be a timed exam (2 hours), this exercise will be good practice for it; as well, it may be an assignment that could surprise you and make you think honestly about things that have happened in your life or things that you have done in your life you might not be too proud of.
You are to do a 2-3 page quick essay on the word Prejudice. Specifically:

2. Write one paragraph (10-12 sentences) where you are sharing with your reader a very specific moment in your life when you were the victim of somebody's prejudice against you.
3. Write one paragraph (10-12 sentences) where you are sharing with your reader a very specific moment in your life when you were the person who was prejudiced against somebody.
4. Find 1 example from Ortíz Cofer's essay and 1 example from Hall's essay where prejudice occurs. Share and quote the examples and explain both how significant they are in the writers' essays and why you chose those examples (10-12 sentences).
Please be aware that while following the length guidelines are important, it is more important to me that I read about and that you share very specific moments where the word "prejudice" takes place. In other words, this assignment will be one of the very few times you will be allowed to use the words "I" or "me." You are allowed to share personal examples in order to persuade your reader just how

powerful those moments of prejudice were. Also, the prejudice can be obvious or it can be subtle or both.
Last, in case someone is struggling with finding examples of this word, prejudice does not have to be just based upon race--it can be based on height, weight, income, gender, sexual orientation, clothes, status, living environment, material goods, political beliefs, religious beliefs, personal lifestyle, nationality, If you can think of others, be kind enough to let me know.
Please write this assignment and send it to Canvas before Friday this week. The writing on this assigned timed essay should not take any longer than 60 minutes to complete. Please write this practice timed essay on Canvas only--I want you to practice writing timed essays for when it really counts for the Midterm Exam coming up very soon. Finally, I will trust that you will be honorable in your writing and inquisitive in your independent learning for this class. Imagine that this is your Midterm Exam and that your grade depended on it.
