In Paper Citations

Once you have gone through the items about MLA in paper citations in week five, practice incorporating citations into responses using signal phrases and parenthetical reference.  The responses must double space in Times New Roman 12-point font and edited.  You may simply letter A-D and then respond accordingly.  They are due in the assignment folder Sunday, Your Turnitin score should be below 15%.

1.    Re-read the essay “On Dumpster Diving” by Lars Eighner beginning on page 472 of Reflections.

2.    Give short answers to the following questions.  For the purpose of this assignment, a short answer is no less than five sentences.  Each response is worth five possible points.

3.    For each answer, you must incorporate a quote, paraphrase, summary or essay reference as shown on topics for week five and using the MLA in paper citations.

A.       Does the writer in the essay enjoy being homeless?  Explain why you think he does or does not.  Use a direct quote. Quote no more than one sentence and use the author’s last name as a signal phrase.  Put the page number of the quote in parenthesis at the end of the quote.  You also need to explain what the quote means in your own words.  Quotes don’t always mean the same thing to everyone.  Explaining it will allow you to put the quote in context of the entire essay too.

B.       Explain why the writer thinks acquiring material items is a waste of time.    Paraphrase your citation.  For this paraphrase, do not use any direct quotes from the essay.  Put the idea in your own words.  However, you still will need to use the author’s last name as a signal phrase and put the page number of the paraphrase at the end of the citation in parenthesis.

C.       What is your opinion of homeless people in America?  Cite the whole essay as part of your answer.  When you cite the whole essay, you only refer to its title and the author’s name.  Usually, you would be citing like this if you were going to explain what you learned about the subject of homeless people.  Did your opinion change after reading the essay?

D.       Summarize the writer’s explanation about the stages a person goes through when coming to terms with being a scavenger.  When you summarize, you automatically paraphrase.  Eighner describes the stages on page 474.  You still need a signal phrase to begin the summary and end it with putting the page number in parenthesis.
