FIVE PARAGRAPH ESSAY
The Inner Person
define for yourself a personal value that has been important in your life, and to explore it in a five
paragraph essay. Any personal value can be your topic (except family).* You should be able to define
your value simply like "honesty" or "courage" or "hard work." Title your essay, "Why I
Value________." You could set your thesis/preview up like this: The most important value in my life is
(value here like truth, honesty, playing music, etc.) because:
________________,_______________,and __________________.
You may set your essay up as an exposition in which you explain or define the value. You may set it up as
an argument stating why that value should be important to you and to others. You can describe the
value.
Finally, you can write a narrative in which you explain how a life experience made a certain value
important to you.
You should be sure to use the first person (I) in your essay.
Follow the "composition sandwich" model for the structure of the five paragraphs.
Be sure include a title and to include a reading reference (with a source or footnote) somewhere in your
essay
You may use your reading reference in any part of the essay where it makes sense.
* Avoid topics about family members or what being a mother or father means because these are topics
for Relationships.
*NO PLAGIARISM (I’ll check)
