Competency 1 |
Know Thy Self: Assess your self-concept and your perception of its effect on your communication. |
Narrative: |
I have increased exposure to my self-concept and the impact that it makes on my communication. I am aware that my perceptions, beliefs, and mood influence the process of reading and responding to the messages. My study shows that effective communicators self-reflect and restrain emotions to remove discrimination and enhance clarity. My strengths are empathy and openness, though I need to advance in confidence and assertiveness in uncomfortable environments. |

Competency 3 |
Determine Your Purpose: Assess your ability to communicate effectively with various audiences for your intended purpose. |
Narrative: |
I generally communicate clearly with intentions and reflect on what I want to get out of every interaction. My course work made me aware that an effective communication begins with an objective- informing, persuading, or forming relationships. Before crucial discussions, I establish my objectives to increase concentration and message consistency. I hope to improve my tone and detail adaptation to diverse audiences. |

Narrative: |
I have learned to choose message content that aligns with my purpose and audience needs. I offer information based on trustworthiness, accuracy, and relevancy. I now understand how facts, examples, and emotive appeals clarify and persuade via message design courses. While I am generally effective, I can improve by incorporating more concise and impactful language to ensure that my key points are easily understood.

Narrative: |
I organize my ideas logically and clearly to ensure that my messages flow effectively. Express the Message: Assess your skill in expressing messages to support effective communication. |
Narrative: |
While I can express my thoughts clearly in writing, I sometimes find verbal expression challenging, especially in high-pressure situations. I've discovered that voice tone, body language, and tempo affect message delivery. My confidence has grown from class presentations and debates, but I need more verbal fluency and composure. Continued rehearsal and feedback will help me strengthen this area. |

Part 2: Communication Competence Improvement Plan |
Overview of plan: Based on my self-assessment, my goal is to enhance my overall communication competence by focusing on areas that need development—specifically verbal expression, purposeful message design, and adaptability in diverse contexts. My strategy emphasizes constant practice, reflection, and feedback with quantifiable objectives. I will practice active listening, seek peer and teacher feedback, and participate in class discussions to enhance fluency and confidence. My development will be tracked through self-reflection diaries and frequent self-evaluations utilizing Engleberg and Wynn's (2015) competencies. I intend to increase my clarity, delivery, and flexibility at the conclusion of the course to improve my academic and personal communication.

Stated Goal |
Measurable Outcome |
1. Improve verbal expression and confidence during oral communication. |
I will practice delivering short presentations weekly and record them to assess voice clarity, pacing, and body language. Reduced filler words and more confidence in self-reflection and peer feedback indicate success. |
2. Enhance message structure and organization for clarity. |
I will outline and review each major communication task (e.g., essays, presentations) using structured frameworks. Comparing teacher input throughout the term and noting logical flow and coherence improvements will assess progress. |
