INFORMATION 2

Information governance includes the process of protecting firm’s data and treat it as a

valuable asset to the business (Rouse, 2016). Data is very important to any company and it

plays a major role in the development of a company. A business should learn how to handle

the data that it is receiving. Imagine a company which is not managing its data and there is no

classification of the most valuable and useless data. It will be even harder to protect this data

from being stolen and used for the wrong purposes.

The management of corporate information requires different processes, roles and

metrics which have to be implemented to make sure that data is well managed. It is an

exercise that involves the whole business organization to take on the laid processes to make

sure that data is protected at all times. Information governance can be divided into

compliance audits, security and database teams. In this era where cyber-crime is common, it

is very important for a business to ensure that all the data that is being received is well

managed and sorted so as to ensure that this information is adding value to the business as

required (Brooks, 2019).

Data or informationwill only become valuable to an organization when it is

appropriate and accessible. Information governance makes sure that meaningful information

is being securely available to the appropriate audience to meet the regulatory requirements of

the company. Information governance also works to make sure that appropriate information

that is valuable to a company is up to date. It also ensures that important data is well

protected by providing archival processes to store data well for a long period of time.

Managing information well will also improve the productivity of employees. It can be

frustrating to look for the information that is needed to process a business transaction but

because of poor management of data. If the valuable data which is connected to this business

transaction was managed well, the transaction could have been carried out easily and faster

therefore improving the efficiency and overall business productivity (AHIMA, 2020).

General Electric is a multinational company which has its headquarters in Boston,

USA. General Electric normally referred to as GE, has been in operation in many years

having been established in the 19th century. In the recent years, GE has been operating in the

fields of healthcare, production of power, aviation, digital industry, financial coverage

lighting among others. This company also has many branches across the world. It was ranked

as the 21st biggest company in the U.S according to the revenue that is provides. Given the

different services that it provides, a lot of data is generated from all those operations.

GE has been experiencing problems with information governance because of the

large amounts of data that is being received (GE, 2020). Graduates from different universities

were recruited in the company to help manage these large volumes of data to ensure that it is

sorted out and that the valuable data is easily accessible and well protected to minimize the

security risks present. The company resolved on putting sensors on gas turbines and other

machines so that data can be easily obtained and also sorted easily and securely. The

information obtained from different operations is sorted and stored in the cloud where it is

accessible when needed and it is also secure. This helped improve the productivity and

functionality of the company.
