Nursing informatics (NI) is the specialty that integrates nursing science with multiple information and analytical sciences to identify, define, manage, and communicate data, information, knowledge and wisdom in nursing practice. NI supports nurses, consumers, patients, the interprofessional healthcare team, and all other stakeholders in their decision-making in all roles and settings to achieve desired outcomes. This support is accomplished through the use of information structures, information processes, and information technology (McGonigle,2017).
Nursing informatics is an everchanging topic in general and not only in nursing, but in general informatics change constantly as technology progresses and moves along. Technology plays a significant role in nursing thus the need to incorporate and be knowledgeable about nursing informatics. According to the American Medical Informatics Association Nursing informatics is the “science and practice that integrates nursing, its information and knowledge, with information and communication technologies to promote the health of people, families, and communication worldwide.” (adapted from IMIA Special Interest Group of Nursing Informatics 2009). One of the huge benefits and pros of nursing informatics is that when properly used and managed it can enhance a patient’s experience by helping nurses to complete quality patient centered care.
We continuously see the use of nursing informatics in the hospital and clinical setting on a daily basis. Electronic Health Records are an excellent resource for nurses to interact with technology and clinical practice. It makes the process of keeping patient’s information a lot safer and it is also a terrific way of communication within health care providers and professionals.
In administration or clerical work of the clinical setting, nursing informatics are useful with tasks such as staff scheduling, cost analysis, budget purposes, and E-mails to improve communication.
In education, we can see the advantages with our current situation as students. Some of the current perks as students include video technology, PowerPoint presentations that are used for lectures, and Microsoft word documents to study for exams.
In research, nursing informatics are focused around evidence-based data. Some examples include electronic sources like Medline, NANDA and some drug interactions websites. They can be used to research patient’s disease’s pathophysiology and medication side effects or interactions can be researched.
In my opinion, the major implication of nursing informatics is that there are many fields that use them. In the clinical setting, patients play a major role in nursing informatics because these tools are mainly used and focused on their care guarantying that the patient is being properly cared for by keying data into the system appropriately. The goal is to enter all the sensitive information accurately into the system to facilitate the patient’s records and the plan of care can be smooth. Human errors such as incorrect allergies, or medication doses can impact the patient negatively as well as for the health care worker.
