GENERALIST PRACTICE IN SOCIAL WORK
Week 4
The Dimensions of Generalist Practice
Dimensions, or levels, of social work practice, include micro, mezzo, and macro practice. These dimensions are similar to the work of Uri Bronfenbrenner and the Ecological Systems Theory that he pioneered. Bronfenbrenner’s Systems Theory represents four systems: the microsystem, the mesosystem, the exosystem, and the macro level system.
Much like Bronfenbrenner’s levels, social work practice operates in three levels or dimensions. As you can see from the diagram, these dimensions can overlap as they focus on the person-in-environment.

Generalist practice in social work focuses on the interaction of individuals and their environment. This approach requires that social workers recognize the variety of systems that interact with the individual and that interact with one another (Miller, Tice, & Harnek Hall, 2008).
