Are influence and persuasion the same?
Despite the fact that people interchange the terms persuasion and influence, there are differences between them. Persuasion is reasoning with someone so that he would believe or do something.
Influence, on the other hand, is the ability to affect the manner of thinking of another.
Both terms have deep meanings for someone who aspires to be a good leader, as both persuasion and influence can be used for motivation.
Both influence and persuasion have the common objective of making a change in a person’s behavior or attitude, but whereas persuasion requires you to communicate, influence works silently without you having to make any effort.
Persuasion
when examining the word persuasion, it can be understood as a method of changing someone’s behavior.
Persuasion is usually a deliberate attempt where the persuader wishes to alter the course of action of the individual through communication. Reasoning with the individual is one such technique. If you are successful, persuasion is said to have been at work.
Influence
Whenever there is a change in a person’s thoughts, feelings or behavior because of another person’s personality, then influence is said to have taken place. Great leaders have this ability or charisma to make others behave or do what they want without actually saying it in words.
Examples of influence and persuasion
Persuasion
Influence
Public service campaigns that urge people to recycle or quit smoking are great examples of persuasion used to improve peoples lives.
people following the foot steps of Mother Teresa and by working hard to help all needy people and get influenced by her work.
Understand the four components of influence.
Positional power
Emotion
Expertise
Non verbal signs
Positional power is relatively straight forward component of influence. Positional power affords you the ability to speak more, lead the direction of a meeting or conversation( for example . selecting a topic). Conversely, expected to talk less if you do wiled less positional power.
Emotion it is one way to counteract the positional power. If you are being dominated in a conversation, your passion and zeal for the subject at hand can effectively counteract their power and level the playing field. Example, how an impassioned performance in a talent show can leave the judges stunned and speechless despite their relative authority.
Expertise passion often links with expertise. You can dominate the conversation, beating out positional power , if you have both passion and expertise.
Non verbal signs The art of non verbal communication and behavior. We often are completely ignorant of our bodies, our movements, posture and most importantly how they are portraying our emotions and confidence.
