Specific Goal Statement: After listening to our speech, our audience will agree the government should require recycling in every state and will start to recycle in their home.

I. Although some people may doubt the effects from recycling, there are many proven benefits of recycling with supporting evidence.
1. Right now, only about 30% of the trash produced in America is recycled.
2. With a general population number of about 325 million people in America, doing the math shows you that almost 600 million more pounds of waste could be recycled.
B. With more recycling, we can limit and significantly reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills.
1. Smaller landfills result in a decreased amount of pollution and poison in the air.
2. So in that way, recycling helps protect the environment from further damage.
C. Not only does recycling conserve the amount of pollution, it helps preserve energy consumption.
1. Not needing as much energy usually results in a decreased need in oil for manufacturing.
2. Recycling aluminum, tin, and plastic that has already been processed needs 95% less energy turning those materials into new objects.
D. If the government were to mandate federal recycling, they would be able to regulate and increase the amount of recycling efforts.
1. As stated in “Recycling: Additional Efforts Could Increase Municipal Recycling: GAO-07-37” by John Stephenson in 2007, “around 66% of energy can be conserved by producing plastic products from recycled plastics.”
2. Almost every hour about 2.5 million empty water bottles being thrown away and not recycled.
E. Issuing laws that force people to recycle and be mindful of their trash will dramatically increase the amount of recycling happening.
1. With these laws in effect, people would have more motive to recycle for fear of punishment fines and fees that could be hundreds of dollars.
2. Recycling would become easier to do and more efficient because everyone would be demanding that it’s easier and more efficient!
