A person's personality is what makes them behave the way they do, think the way they think and feel the way they do. Simply put, personality is what defines who people are as individuals, and it is what makes them unique from other people. There are some theories concerning personality traits, and many psychologists believe that there are five broad dimensions when it comes to personality. These aspects are referred to as the big five dimensions. The big five is mainly utilized in a theoretical framework in attempts to comprehend a person's personality traits and its general components. I will discuss my personality traits in this paper and include a breakdown of the results that I received from taking an online big five personality test. I will go over suggested solutions for functioning with other personalities, a comparison of my big five results with the sixteen personality factors while reviewing how certain traits might be linked to genetics.
Separating the main traits of personality into the Big 5 dimensions provides a comprehensive understanding of a personality. The big 5 dimensions may be more easily remembered using the acronym OCEAN. OCEAN stands for Openness to experiences, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, and Neuroticism. When it comes to openness to experiences, it describes a person's level of creativity, and intellectual inquisitiveness, along with their need for innovation. I scored the highest on Intellect. I am usually more old-fashioned, and I am not very daring or original. There are certain times when I can be creative, and I do have an openness to try new things when I think I will benefit from them. Conscientiousness might be able to label your level of work ethic and how organized you are. This was my second highest score. I display a good amount of self-discipline, act respectfully, and my objectives are to achieve my goals whether at home or on the job. I am an Account Manager for a large company, and I perform all of my work duties on a daily basis with hardly any supervision. Extroversion calculated a person's level of enthusiasm and socialism. Out of all of the personality traits, I scored the lowest on extroversion, which tells me that I am more of an introvert. I do tend to be more of a shy person who concentrates more on inner feelings rather than on external sources of incentive. There are a small number of people in this world that I consider to be my friends, which is a common trait of an introvert. I feel like there is more value in staying close to long-term friends and relationships than there is in having a large social circle of associates. I do not always choose to stay home. I do enjoy going out on occasion and socializing, but I do not usually start a conversation with large groups of people. Agreeableness calculates a person's level of kindness and friendliness. This was my second to lowest score which only somewhat surprised me since I am not very cooperative or compassionate toward other people. I am more suspicious, aggressive, and antagonistic when it comes to other people. Right in the middle of my assessment was emotional stability, which surprised me. Emotional stability, also referred to as Neuroticism, measures the ability a person has to stay calm when that are faced with issues or stress. Someone who has unstable emotions is more likely to become violent or destructive when they are under pressure. There have been many times when I found myself becoming a bit unstable, but there have also been times when I am cool under pressure. After taking the big 5 personality test, I learned that I am an introverted and challenging individual.
More and more we are noticing team oriented companies emerge every day. A business that is team oriented counts on smaller workgroups to manage some different projects and duties. It gives employees the chance to get to know each other, which will help them to work together efficiently in the long run. Members and leaders of the team must distribute the tasks skillfully once they comprehend the weaknesses and strengths of each member. Each team member possesses their own unique set of skills and personality that they bring to the table. Some members might share similar experiences, while others might have very distinctive ones that maybe only one other member might relate to. When it comes to work teams, there is bound to be a large number of different personalities, so it is critical for each member to attempt to understand those differences. When members take the time to understand the different characteristics that people have, they can begin to understand the best way that they can work with others. Businesses will be able to develop better teams by utilizing the many different personality traits of their employees. It is crucial to consider the personality traits that will be necessary for the task at hand before building a work team. Then it can be decided what personalities would blend in with and benefit the team the most.
Buchanan projected that teams that had personality configurations of high amounts of openness to experience and conscientiousness with moderate levels of extraversion are more common to show better performance patterns. (Buchanan, 1998). It can also prove useful to couple new personnel with other members of the team that shares similar personality traits to theirs. The Big 5 personality evaluation specifies that group personalities are known to be more creative at brainstorming and have a better chance of completing an assigned project. Businesses have discovered that teamwork can be a valuable element in a company's accomplishments.
To link my Big 5 personality evaluation to the 16 personality factors, I took another online personality assessment for the 16 personality factors. There are 16 different kinds of personalities which are labeled by an acronym that has 4 letters with an added variant at the end. I scored as an ISTP-A which is referred to as the "Virtuoso." A Virtuoso will discover things by looking at it and touching it. They tend to explore the worlds with some curiosity and rationalism. It is said that people with this personality type move around from project to project and develop the valuable things needed just for fun while learning about the world around them as they go. I think this sounds like me in a way. I do like to learn new things, and I do not get too involved with projects. I enjoy learning from my mistakes and my accomplishments. I enjoy making things better and working with my hands, and the Virtuoso person is no stranger to getting their hands dirty. Virtuosos are often mechanics or engineers. I related to the part about the Virtuoso that said that I seem to be a simple person at first glance, but I am very perplexing in my own unique way. I can sometimes be friendly, but I am usually an extremely private person. I believe I get most of my traits from my father. Anyone who knows him says I behave just like him, including my mother. Although I lost my father when I was young, I know that he instilled most of my values that I have, and those values have been a significant contributor to my personality.
Many Psychiatrists use the Big 5 assessment to label the human psyche and personality. Breaking up personality into the 5 dimensions of personality can be used in order to classify a person's personality. I am usually soft spoken and shy, but if I am rubbed the wrong way I can still fight for the things that I believe in. I am decisive, strong-willed and I rarely waste my energy for personal advantages. I am not a sociable person, and I do not work well with others, but I know how to put some of these negative attributes to the side to create positive results when necessary. I think that the big 5 and the 16 Personalities tests were fun and informative.
