Tasks
1) Selection of a Health Education CBO
A CBO is a non-profit organization that provides social services at the local level, whose activities are based primarily on volunteer efforts. This means that CBOs depend heavily on voluntary contributions for labor, material and financial support. Part of the assignment is to identify a CBO that meets the criteria, it is up to the student to determine if the CBO meets the assignment requirements.
To be a CBO and qualified for this assignment it must be:
A. A community based, non-profit [tax exemption 501(c)(3)] that provides health education to the community (you need to evaluate a health education program).
B. Primary focus of the organization is health education or advocacy, NOT health care services
C. A non-governmental nor quasi-governmental agency (Planned Parenthood & Red Cross are not allowed). CANNOT be a government sponsored program such as WIC, or a branch on any government agency such as a county office of health.
D. Based in California, preferably Southern CA, local to where you live, work or attend school (it may be a national organization with a local/state chapter).
E. It may NOT be your place of employment
F. Choose a CBO that serves a community/population and health need that interests you. Look for one that you may want to work with or for in the future or use for internship. Local is preferred, somewhere you could visit will improve your understanding of the CBO (not all CBOs have a location) (Not required). You may also contact the CBO by phone to gain information.
2) Sign up
Once you have selected your CBO sign up in BeachBoard CBO sign up Discussion Board. Check that no other student has posted the CBO (duplication of another students CBO will result in a point reduction). Post the name of your CBO in the Title of the discussion post (do NOT abbreviate use the full name, even if the CBO generally just uses its acronym).
3) Research the CBO
Accessing the CBO: Information on the CBO needed for the PSA may be obtained online, in person and/or by phone. Visiting the site of the CBO is preferred and arranging an interview with a key contact for the organization can help you gain cultural competence with the population.
4) Create the PSA

PSA Requirements
· PSA needs to be 4-6 minutes long uploaded to YouTube. Must be publicly available.
· Use the third person perspective, avoid generalizations.
· The presentation must have an audio component that is the student’s voice, visual of self is optional.
· Images should be used to enhance the presentation, all video images should be developed by the student, the student may use PowerPoint, Animaker PowToons, or any other video capture programs. Do not use any copyrighted images in your presentation (with water marks). You may include the logo of the organization under the fair use clause, when used for commentary (the instructor is not a resource on how to use the technology, there are many tutorials online to help you use the video capture software you have selected).
· Creativity is encouraged and professionalism is required.
· If you are visible be aware of eye contact, body language, vocal tone (show enthusiasm), background, and professional dress.
· Practice your presentation prior to video/audio taping, do not read your notes.
· As the presentation will be posted publicly please be sure NO personally identifying information is included in your presentation, use only your first name in your introduction.
· Text should be minimal; your voice should provide most of the information. Reminder when posted on YouTube the size is smaller than when you are reading your screen.
Hints
· Start EARLY.
· Practice before you record your full presentation; test a small sample to be sure you can load to YouTube, and that the audio quality is good.
· If you have never posted on YouTube before, create an account and try the technology you plan to use to be sure you know how to create a product that will work.
· Avoid background noise and distracting moving backgrounds.
5) Upload your video to YouTube
The following links are provided for your convenience. There are many tutorials and YouTubes on how to upload to YouTube. Use a search engine to find up-to-date help and specific to the tools you are using (PowerPoint, Camtasia, computer, phone, android, iOS, etc.).

6) Submission YouTube posted on Discussion Board
1. Post a link to your YouTube video on the CBO PSA Discussion Board with a brief introduction of which CBO was reviewed.
2. Check that your link works and that your settings on YouTube allow public viewing (suggestion: try someone else’s computer to see if it works). Failure to have the video accessible to the instructor may result in it being considered late or no credit. You may take it down or make it private after receiving a grade.
7) Peer Review PSAs
1. Review five other students CBO PSAs, if you see that a student already has five review you must do another student. You will not be able to see other students’ postings until you have posted.
2. Fill out the rubric in word. Critically evaluate each category and score accordingly, delete the text from categories not used (see example) and add up the total points Include a sentence or two on what you liked, and one area of improvement in the comments box. Giving identical scorings, incomplete forms and lack of comments will result in deduction of points.
3. Cut and paste the rubric into the discussion board thread for the student you reviewed.

Comments : Great research is presented. The organization of your presentation and the overall presentation style was successful in presenting the content. I like that you included reviews from the community that the organization has served. Some of the slides were a bit bland and could have had less information and organized with bullet points instead of paragraphs and more visuals to further illustrate the main points. |
