Methods of data compilation Mortality data was compiled by Gapminder using data from IARC GLOBOCAN 2002 (estimates for 2002) and WHO-IARC time series data.
IARC GLOBOCAN 2002 data: (downloaded in March 2009)
(1) goto "http://www-dep.iarc.fr/",
(2) click on "GLOBOCAN 2002" on the top bar,
(3) click on "Tables -> By cancer" to the left.
WHO-IARC time series data: (downloaded in March 2009)
(1) goto "http://www-dep.iarc.fr/",
(2) click on "WHO" on the top bar,
(3) click on "Tables -> By cancer" to the left.
Selection criteria for methods of combination:
1. When only IARC GLOBOCAN 2002 data is available, we use the data for 2002.
2. When time series data covers 2002, we use WHO-IARC time series data.
3. When time series data is empty in 2002 but available before and after 2002,
we apply interpolation method to fill it.
4. When time series data stops before 2002, we only use IARC GLOBOCAN 2002 data.
5. If time series data stops very close to 2002 for a high-income country,
we apply extrapolation method for 2002 based on time series data. 
6. If time series data is empty in 2002, but IARC GLOBOCAN 2002 data fits very well into
time series, we combine them directly.
