3. During the past week (or since your last entry), what has been the major economic or business news relating to India?

According to The Hindu, Preetha (2017) discusses the current demands of the textile Industry in India. The textile industry has requested the government for refunds of previously paid duties such as market committee fee and cross subsidy. The Union Commerce Minister will act as a liaison for the government with the textile industry officials (Preetha, 2017).

The rationale behind this move is due to poor performance of exports which has led to increase in debts for instance, yarn exports per month have dropped to 90 million-100 million kg vs 120 million-140 million kg in 2014( Preetha, 2017).Another reason is the risk of asset absoluteness due to reduced spinning capacity( Preetah,2017).

4. During the past week (or since your last entry), what has been the major political news in India?

The current lead story is the suicide attack at BSF camp near Srinagar airport which left three jawans injured (Indian Express, 2017). The police managed to apprehend and shoot down two militants while another two are taking cover in one of the buildings of the 182nd Battalion camp (Indian Express, 2017). According to reports, the militants’ goal was paralyze operations of the 182nd battalion near the airport (Indian Express, 2017). This has led to temporarily stopping operations at the airport until tight security has been instilled (Indian Express, 2017). The terror attack fortunately did not cause catastrophic destruction despite the close proximity of other institutions to the 182nd Battalion such as the Kashmir Valley School, airport used by Armed Forces and VIPs and house training centers of the BSF AND CRPF. Conclusively, these institutions are currently closed down (Indian Express, 2017).

5. What new information have you found related to religion in India?

The Hindustantimes (2017) illuminates on the current wave of vigilantism by gau rakshaks against alleged cow smugglers and slaughterers. Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh chief Mohan Bhagwat has come to the defense of the gau rakshaks stating that being protectors of cows does not implicate one in the current violent attacks (Hindustantimes, 2017).

The encompassing issue is that the cow represents a scared symbol for Hindus and the current attacks by vigilantes is due to the smuggling and killing of cows. The implication is that these events are being propagated by the rule of Prime Minister Narendra Modi (Hindustantimes, 2017).The victims being targeted are the Rajasthan’s Pehlu Khan and Uttar Pradesh’s Akhlaq who are minority Muslim groups.

Conclusively, the Sangh chief recommends the government to stop any criminal acts against innocent people but also not to victimize those that participate in cow-protection and cow-promotion (Hindustantimes, 2017).

6. During the past week (or since your last entry), what has been the major health news relating to India?

According to Dutt (2017) in the Hindustantimes article highlights the Delhi’s government directive for ambulance services to be used to transport pregnant women. The Centralized and Trauma Services (CATS) is the ambulance service arm, which has been viewed as not being employed to full capacity (Dutt, 2017).

This call comes during a time when Delhi has experienced an upsurge in institutional births in hospitals, nursing homes and other health facilities (Dutt, 2017). Dutt (2017) quotes a Delhi government official who states that only 50% of the service is being utilized which can be attributed to ignorance among the public. There have been cases of lack of efficient facilities such as the death of two newborns due to lack of access of ventilators, which prompted the order by the Chief Minister (Dutt, 2017).

7. During the past week (or since your last entry), what has been the major news story regarding to the environment in India?

According to The Hindu, Perinchery (2017) reports that tigers are currently migrating in large numbers into Nepal from India particularly though the Terai whose major activity is agriculture. This poses a conservation problem in which Tigers have to be protected to encourage high population (Perinchery, 2017).

Perinchery (2017) rationalizes that the migration is due to adverse changes in the natural habitats of tigers. Human population and economic activities are the major causes for this current trend. Recently scientists from WWF-India and WWF-Nepal resorted to track movement of tigers by setting up cameras (Perinchery, 2017).

The other dangers posed on the tiger population Perinchery (2017) adds, is infrastructural development. Preinchery (2017) concludes that conservationists are calling for more action to protect the general tiger population because of the current migrations.

8. During the past week (or since your last entry), what other news story did you find interesting?

The most interesting news is about the livability of Mumbai, India by the British Broad casting Corporation (2017). The article highlights the news behind this proclamation in which 23 people were killed in a stampede last Friday in which some blame to complacency.

The accident is reported to have been caused by the poor structural system of the railway in which the stair case was found to be unstable( BBC,2017).This shows a case of poor management of the transport system which has persisted overtime even as the city has experienced an upsurge of population numbers, currently at 22 million( BBC,2017).

Despite there being petitions and a report by World Bank in 2010 on the excess crowding which Mumbai’s train system handles, no significant changes have been made. Furthermore, the city also experiences excess flooding due to poor drainage and road systems (BBC, 2017). Conclusively, Mr.Fernades calls for civic action by citizens to ensure action is taken considering that funds are being redirected into clearing land for housing projects and gated communities (BBC, 2017).
