Part 2 Annotated reference list: The annotated reference list supports students in (1) locating relevant scholarship; (2) critically analyzing academic sources; and (3) building the foundations of the literature review and/or evidence base for the final report. To begin, students must introduce their proposed topic, central research question and inquiry methodology in 250-300 words. Following this, the reference list must include five peer-reviewed journal articles which relate to the chosen topic or theoretical framework. Each annotation should be 250-300 words and summarize the source’s academic discipline, research question, theoretical framework, key concepts, methodology, main arguments – and most importantly – the article’s relation and expected contribution to the independent research project. Students should also draw comparisons with other sources included in the reference list. Students may use any referencing style, but must be consistent throughout. For the annotated reference list, can you use required articles from the course syllabus? No. You should select five academic articles/chapters which are not listed in the course syllabus (however, within each annotation, you should note any comparisons or useful overlap between the selected source and required readings/other selected sources). For the annotated reference list, can you use a few sources by the same author? Absolutely. Again, be sure to draw comparisons between these sources and describe how each might uniquely contribute to your project. For the methodology, how many case studies would be ideal? The ‘ideal’ number of case studies is tricky to judge because there can be good justifications for focusing on one or two (which privileges depth), and there can be good justifications for focusing on themes across multiple (which privileges breadth). The key word here is justification: ‘I chose this particular route, and here’s my rationale for that decision...’ The majority of class members are planning to focus on 1-3 humanitarian-themed campaigns, events, initiatives or companies, and are planning to conduct a content analysis of related websites, blogs, newspaper articles, policy documents, advertisements, social media or some combination of these. This seems like a prudent strategy (and the same strategy adopted by the majority of authors in our course readings). For the annotated reference list, can you use an article that is not about your specific case study/studies? Absolutely! There may or may not be academic literature related to your specific case study/studies. Thus, you could also look for literature related to your topic more broadly (for example, if you were writing about the ‘We Day’ concert, you could look to the wider literature on charitainment and analyses of similar charitable mega-events). Furthermore,

you could look for articles which use a conceptual framework you find particularly relevant (for example, other articles which interpret their findings through the ‘emergency imaginary’ if that is a lens you plan to adopt in your own paper) or articles which use a similar methodological approach (for example, other content analyses of YouTube video campaigns which help you to describe how you conducted your own mini-study). Essentially, as long as YOU find the article helpful, and can articulate a useful parallel in your annotated reference list – you’re heading in the right direction! (One more trick is to find an article you consider particularly useful, and scan the reference list to see who else that author is citing).
