The Affordable Care Act (ACA) presents an opportunity for policy change that can benefit both APRNs and rural communities by addressing the workforce shortages in rural areas. 

The ACA helps to improve access to health care coverage, but it also expands the scope of practice for APRNs. This allows APRNs to provide more comprehensive care, which in turn can help to address the primary care shortage in rural areas. In particular, advanced practice registered nurse practitioners (APRN-P) can now provide some preventive services such as routine physicals and checkups without requiring a physician's referral or authorization. This expansion of scope has enabled APRNs-P to become a key part of the primary care team in rural communities where access to physicians is limited or non-existent. 

In addition, the ACA has increased reimbursement rates for certain services provided by APRNs-P which can help increase their income and make their services more affordable for patients. This improved reimbursement rate allows APRNs-P to better serve rural communities by providing necessary medical attention at a significantly lower cost than if they had seen a physician provider instead. Furthermore, APRN-Ps can also take on more patients due to the increased payment rates which further helps reduce wait times and decrease overall health costs in these isolated areas. 

Finally, the ACA has also included provisions that have enabled nursing students from underserved backgrounds such as minorities and low-income households, who may not have been able to pursue a degree before, now have clear pathways into nursing careers. By increasing diversity within the nursing field this supports a more culturally competent workforce that is best suited for working with various populations within rural communities. 

Overall, the ACA plays an important role in helping support policy change for advanced practice registered nurses so that they can better serve those living in medically underserved areas such as rural communities. Through increased scope of practice and improved reimbursement rates, APRNS-P are able to provide quality patient care while reducing overall healthcare costs associated with primary care visits in these areas. Furthermore, with enhanced recruitment programs it opens up pathways for minority students from disadvantaged backgrounds who may otherwise have been unable to pursue an educational pathway into nursing careers.
