Part 1 Instructions:

Create a branching scenario decision tree to determine who is an essential worker in an organization. You may choose your own organization or one you have an interest in. Your work should end with a decision: essential or not. Use this slide to plan out your branching scenario.

Then click on the links or scroll in the left side slide view to insert your question and two options.

It may be hard to keep each slide straight so you can work from this slide and ctrl + click the link in each box to input your question and options.

Once you have created your branching scenario, post it to the canvas discussion board, with a brief description of the type of organization it was created for.

REMINDER: Make sure you complete Part 2 of the discussion as well.

NOTE: This slide is hidden from the slideshow, skipping slides 1 & 2 (showing 3-17).

Feel free to edit and design the layout instead of blank white slides. Master Slides was used for the background images/titles in the Module 5 example, don’t forget to refer back to it!

9

Uniformed Patrol

Public service is by its very nature an essential function. Responding to calls for service is important in keeping us all safe during this pandemic. For this reason, patrol officers and supervisory staff will need to report for duty as usual. In order to keep our workers safe, roll calls are to be conducted out of doors or supervisors are allowed to call each officer and give assignments prior to arrival. Also, start and end times can be flexed up to two hours in each direction to minimize the amount of people in the station at shift change. At no time is the level of officers to fall below minimum manning standards.

1.1.1 Result/Feedback: Essential – The flexing of schedules should assist officers in staying healthy while allowing for some flexibility to allow for more home and work balance during the pandemic. The only exception will be those at in-service training will be allowed to complete this training through the training portal from home.

10

Uniformed Administrative Staff

The function of Uniformed Administrative Staff is to work in direct support and supervision of patrol officers and patrol supervisors. This includes tasks like acquiring equipment and services, developing a schedule and services for maintaining cruisers, scheduling training and maintaining records for certification and licensing, etc. Scheduling can be flexible as needed to meet the needs of vendors and to allow for more home and work balance through the pandemic.

1.1.2 Result/Feedback: Non-essential – Uniformed administrative staff will be allowed to work remotely during the pandemic. If changes are needed to be made in the officer’s schedule, the Deputy Chief or Chief of Police shall be notified for approval.

11

Investigative Detective

As an investigative detective, part of your responsibilities are to investigate major crimes, do follow up investigations at homes or otherwise in the field, conduct line up and/or show ups, record interviews with suspects and witnesses, identify and apprehend violent fugitives, and assist patrol as needed on scenes. You are essential and need to be here to perform these duties.

1.2.1 Result/Feedback: Essential – Much like their uniformed patrol counterparts, an investigative detective’s job requires them to be here and working in the field and office. This ensures that major crimes are being properly investigated and violent fugitives arrested.

12

Court Prosecutor/Evidence Officer

As the court prosecutor or evidence officer, the need for your presence in the office will be dependent on what is going on in any given day. Court scheduling and remote appearances should be scheduled to do from home and any discovery requests handled from the office. Evidence processing will have to be done from the office but reports and discovery requests for certifications can be handled remotely. Communicate schedules daily with the Detective Commander.

1.2.2 Result/Feedback: You will be on a hybrid model where you will be required to be in the office on certain days and allowed to work from home on others. Communication with the Detective Commander for scheduling purposes is essential. This will allow flexibility for work and home life balance.

13

Clinician

You are an essential employee who needs to be on scene to both assist in mitigating potentially volatile mental health issues and to make assessments of the medical well-being of persons in crisis. You can provide counselling, complete sectioning paperwork if needed, and make critical referrals to service.

2.1.1 Result/Feedback: Essential – You will be required to report to duty as normal, although the hours will be flexible. Reports and billing time can be completed at home. Follow up appointments can be handled either remotely or scheduled to fit the needs of you and the family gaining services. This will allow you to flex your schedule to assist with needs during the pandemic.

14

Domestic Violence Advocate

The domestic violence advocate is a part-time position who normally works from an office in the police station. Follow ups are conducted by phone or in person. These follow ups can be done on the phone or via Zoom or some other video messaging platform.

2.1.2 Result/Feedback: Non-essential – This work will be done remotely. As a result, you will not be limited to 2 days a week in the office, but can spread the 16 hours out throughout the week. This will result in better service to those requiring the service as scheduling can be adjusted to fit their needs.

15

Records Division

The dissemination of reports and handling of requests for reports is an essential function. It is vital to transparency and accountability to the public and to fulfill legal requirements for reporting within the state. However, much of the requests can be handled through contactless digital means. Times can be flexible as these requests have a ten day legal requirement. Work with the department records supervisor for scheduling.

2.2.1 Result/Feedback: Hybrid – This will be set up as a hybrid model as there may be days you need to be in the records division to handle requests for items not stored electronically. The flexibility will allow for more freedom to balance home and work during the pandemic.

16

Administrative Assistant

You support the senior Uniformed Administrative Staff and much of the functions and communications are digital in nature. This task will be handled from home. At the start of each day, the desk officer will be tasked with emailing you any documents in your mailbox so you can adequately follow up and have all the information you need to complete your tasks. The Deputy Chief of Police will be tasked with monitoring the productivity of Administrative Assistants. He will insure they have all equipment and supplies they need to work effectively from home.

2.2.2 Result/Feedback: Non-essential – While providing a vital role to the successful running of the department, administrative assistants can work from home and be just as effective. They will allowed to be flexible in their scheduling to assist with the home/work balance so long as it does not interfere with the day to day business of the department.
