Academic Plan of Study

I am currently pursuing my BA-GST Human Resource Management concentration with electives in Psychology. My goal is to develop core skills and knowledge that will serve as a foundation for my career in human resource management/psychology by the end of the four-course. These skills will help me to address behavioral and mental problems and improve overall health in the community and within the workforce. My specific goal is to develop strong communication and interpersonal skills by the end of my BA.GST degree that will enable me to work efficiently with others. I particularly like listening to other people’s ideas and opinions and giving them reasonable consideration. I have found that in many scenarios the appropriate response and acknowledgement to feedback are particularly necessary for attaining interpersonal skills because it helps me in learning new things about people around me and challenging my personality to promote inclusion, equality and diversity amongst individuals.

These skill sets will allow me to build and foster a positive working relationship with my clients and employees that potentially lead to positive outcomes for the parties involved as well as promoting and enhancing professional advancement and personal growth.  For instance, being able to listen actively, give, and receive effective feedback with my clients will help in resolving problems and ultimately promoting wellness. Similarly, having good interpersonal skills such as empathy, teamwork, patience, and a positive attitude enhances trust and cooperation with clients by creating positive work environments.

Enduring Skills

Enduring skills are essential for personal and professional growth. Ethics, problem-solving, and research skills are some of the enduring skills that will help me adjust to the curriculum to maximize my development. These skills will prepare me for advanced coursework such as the psychology of personality, counseling process and technique, and scientific assessment and testing (SNHU, 2020). For instance, problem-solving skills will allow me to analyze information and develop appropriate solutions to problems objectively. Studying the psychology of personality helps me develop core problem-solving, conflict-resolution and decision making skillsets and how to make informed decisions about influential personality traits and predicting how individuals may respond to certain situations.

The counseling process and technique help develop ethical decision making by providing me with tools and processes for cultivating and maintaining ethical conduct.  This ethics also correlates to my strength of discipline to maintain integrity and respect in all aspects of my interactions with clients, co-workers and upper management. “An ethical approach is crucial in encouraging the overall problem solving in the workplace. Problem solving involves the resolution of concerns, disagreements and unacceptable practices in the workplace.

An ethical approach defines the appropriate ways of dealing with competing claims. This includes handling conflicts between personal values by the various individuals. For instance, an ethical approach guides in developing a way of resolving conflicts between two or more people in the society (Bamberger, Biron & Meshoulam, 2014).” Ethics, problem-solving and research skills are core attributes to both my professional and personal goals. Ethics in human resource management is the highest standard of conduct and ensures that the organization is abiding by the laws, thereby, safeguarding the organization’s reputation.

General Studies Concentration

My chosen concentrations for BA-GST in human resource management are human resource management, employee and labor in administration, employee and labor relations, organizational leadership, business law, introduction to ethics, and introduction to psychology. “A general studies degree can prepare you for a range of job opportunities. The critical thinking and communication skills you gain with a bachelor of general studies can benefit many career paths. And having a 4-year degree can help you advance a career across many fields” (SNHU, 2020).

“The specialized HR degree program combines your business education with the fundamentals of human resources. You'll learn about employee safety, labor relations and the management of a global workforce. These skills can help set you apart when pursuing your HR career” (SNHU, 2020). Critical thinking and communication skills will be beneficial in my personal and professional life. It will enable me to make better decisions and solve problems in an effective and efficient manner. Gaining the knowledge about the importance of labor relations, employee safety, along with effective communication is a great asset in a professional environment.

Academic Rationale

Completing my degree in BA-GST allows me to develop core skills and knowledge that will serve as a foundation for my psychology career by the end of the four-course. These skills will help me to address behavioral and mental problems and improve overall health in the community. Pursuing BA. GST degree in Human Resource Management along with Psychology will help achieve my desired goal of helping people to manage negative and challenging thoughts such as fears, grief, anxiety, and depression.

Precisely, the degree program will equip me with marketable skills, experience, and prepare me for my career. For instance, during my psychology study, I will acquire excellent research, interpersonal, problem solving, communicating complex information, and analyzing data vital for understanding the mind and human behavior (Southern New Hampshire University, 2020). Importantly, earning the degree will help me better achieve my career by improving my problem-solving skills, thus helping me confront life challenges, make informed decisions, and reach personal goals. These skills will also be great as a human resource manager because it will allow me to understand the individuals I'll be managing and create a team of highly qualified and motivated individuals.

The diversity and flexibility of a general studies degree allows me to choose electives that aligns with my future goals and prepares me to work better in a more diverse environment in the future. Taking courses such as Intro to Psychology, Human Growth and Development, and Organizational Leadership provides insight into human behavior. Interacting with students and staff from different backgrounds enhances creativity and problem solving as people with differing viewpoints collaborate to create solutions. Crucially, diversity helps me to learn skills essential for building communities and a positive working environment. Thus, learning in diverse settings helps develop a sense of safety and accepts and promotes diversity in daily lives and professional careers.

Conclusion

As human resource manager, understanding the behavior of people and knowing how to communicate effectively will be a great asset for conflict resolution. The skill of effective communication emphasizes evidence-based practices, which will enhance my practical qualification on the things around people with different personalities. For instance, psychology looks into mental health problems and attempts to resolve them using verified scientific research methods proven to be effective. The skills, knowledge, and experience that I will gain by taking electives in psychology will be relevant as a human resource manager. According to Hughes (2019), mental illness is increasingly becoming a global problem, and thus it needs a global response. As such, I will use what I’ve learnt in psychology courses and business leadership courses to be better prepared when I get a job as human resource manager to make the work environment a productive, efficient, happier and healthier place.
