Outline for the Critical Analysis of “The Lottery”

I. Introduction: Have you ever had an internal conflict?

II. Thesis Statement: Author Shirley Jackson creates the conflict of man versus self within the short story, “The Lottery” to reveal how the main character Tessie Hutchinson had an internal conflict of selfishness.

III. Body Paragraphs:

1. The first example that explores the conflict of man versus self within Tessie Hutchinson was revealed in the middle of the short story. Here the audience sees the main character, Tessie Hutchinson rushing out of her house to meet her fellow villagers. Tessie is happy and only involved in her duties as a house wife, she does not care about the outcome of the lottery nor the wait time the villagers had to wait for Tessie to come to the lottery. Tessie shows the conflict of man versus self very strongly here because this example reveals the selfishness Tessie has for herself and her carelessness of the others around her.
