The Plight of Immigrants

I am a Chinese student, and in my traditional opinion, there is nothing about immigration and conflict in China. Growing up under the influence of culture and media news, it is often possible to see the news report that drug traffickers from Central American countries have smuggled into the United States or Mexico. This kind of day-to-day information has given me such a sense of immigration: they are both aggressive and dangerous. When I came to the United States, my ideas remained unchanged, and of course, the impact of that has also given me some bias on immigration, I thought that many immigrants from Mexico were dangerous, carrying drugs or carrying other hazardous goods.

When I took the English-100 this semester, I learned that the problem of immigration is not just on the surface of benefits. Immigration is not just a simple matter. There are many reasons for migration, such as the causes of war oppression and asylum. In class, we've seen a video from North Korea female Yeonmi Park. When she was young, she saw people executed by the North Korean government for holding foreign films, her father was dead, and her mother was raped; she has no longer can bear the oppression of human rights from North Korea, she chose to seek asylum in the social world and leave the country. It is clear that Yeonmi Park has found a place to be asylum and to continue to live a better life, which is the reason and the fact that I have never thought of immigrants, many immigrants may be like her, just hoping to get the human rights that they deserve. I also read an article named “Mother Tongue” from Amy Tan, a Chinese-American who grew up in the United States. In those days, China was at war. Amy's parents also want her to stay away from this dangerous place. On the one hand, she is forced to leave her hometown, and the second is to get her to get the best educational resources in the world. Her story reflects the terms of “nativism” and “push-pull theory” that I learned in class. In my opinion, besides describing the accent of her mother speaking English, this article also reflects the ethnic diversity brought by immigrants. After learning this article I have also learned about the immigration problem it’s also in history, and immigration has helped many people get better living conditions and away from the war.

But what impressed me most was the book “Enrique’s Journey.” The plot of the book entirely fits my imagination about immigration. They were dressed in rags, without food or shelter, and they would flee on the train to avoid the police, and they would encounter all kinds of life-threatening dangers. I was touched when I finished reading this book. Many children like him just wanted to get together with their parents. I don’t know how much blood and sweat they paid for it; I know how brave these children are. It's like I was interviewing my girlfriend's grandmother, her story tells me the reasons why most people immigrate, and they want their families to live better, for their families no matter how much hard work and sweat.

After this semester in our course, I feel the original meaning and meaning of immigration genuinely. I know that immigrants have a lot of uncontrollable factors, wars, natural disasters or better living conditions. I believe that immigrants are the fundamental rights of human beings, and everyone has the right to choose their own life. In my opinion, most immigrants are not harmful to society. Instead, they can produce some healthy competition to promote the development of society, and also can make the culture more diversified. Here are some ideas as an international student, for me, better living environment and better educational resources are now many Chinese parents want their children to get. In fact, the foreign student group is like an immigrant group, but we do not do anything to affect the social order, but instead bring another culture to this strange country. Overall I believe, most immigrants want to bring positive influence and energy to this strange country. So at the end of the semester, my thinking changed, and I became understanding that the immigrant culture and I accepted the immigrant population, and we should respect their rights.
