Topic
Research is required for good essay topics.
The local, state, or national news are places to explore and investigate original and thought-provoking topics.
The research essay provides information about a current event and uses six outside sources.
The essay must be four complete pages.
Pattern of Organization
The research essay requires a pattern of organization: argumentative, problem/solution, or cause/effect.
Choose the pattern that is most appropriate for the approved essay topic.
Argumentative Organization
The argumentative essay focuses on presenting two sides of an argument, bud convincing the audience the writer’s side is right choice.
This is how to organize the essay:
Introduction
Background in formation
The writer’s position using data, evidence, and examples to support the claim
The opposing position presented with fair treatment and respect
Conclusion backing up the writer’s argument and making a call to take action.
Proposal Organization
A proposal essay focuses on solutions to a problem. The first two to three paragraphs should present the problem. Four to six solutions should then be proposed.
Follow this organization for the body paragraphs:
First solution, reasons, supporting evidence, and drawbacks
Second solution, reasons, supporting evidence, and drawbacks
Third solution, reasons, supporting evidence, and drawbacks
Fourth solution, reasons, supporting evidence, and drawbacks
Cause/ Effect Organization
There are three common ways to organize the essay:
Introduction
Background information
State a cause and then discuss its effects
State an effect and then discuss its causes
Identify a chain of causes and effects
Conclusion
Title Page
The research essay has a title page – follow the example given in the module
Since it has title page, there is not a MLA header at the top of the essay on the left. Just indent and begin typing the essay at the top of page one.
Outline
Introductory Paragraph
Background Paragraph
Body Paragraphs
Concluding Paragraph
A formal full sentence outline is required.
Sources
Six sources are required for the research project. Two of the sources must be scholarly and four must be popular.
All six sources must be credible.
All sources must be current – within the last two years.
East Central’s library website is an excellent place to start on research.
Passwords are posted in the module.
Cite the Sources Correctly
Use the textbook to cite and document sources correctly.
Watch the videos in the module.
Two to four direct quotes required
Direct quotes should not be more than a couple of sentences.
Any information used from the sources must be cited. If the student uses his words and the sources paraphrased words, the end of the paragraph can be cited.
Failure to cite the information will result in a zero.
Block Quote
One block quote may be used in the essay. An example is provided in the module.
The block quote may not be over five sentences.
A complete sentence must be used to introduce the quote and a colon is used.
Quotation marks are not used on a block quote.
The quote is tabbed to the right on and block aligned.
The period goes on the left of the parentheses.
Works Cited
A complete MLA formatted Works Cited is required.
Remember to un-bold the citations from the annotated bibliography.
Submit
Submit the title page, outline, research paper (four pages), and Works Cited to Canvas as one document.
Microsoft Word is required for all submissions to Canvas.
