THE WEINSTEIN COMPANY
I selected The Weinstein Company due to the alleged and unethical actions by Harvey Weinstein, its co-founder, which have caused a shockwave in the entertainment industry these past weeks.
I first observed the use of Impression Management as defined in Johnson (2016) when it was reported in the news that several allegations of harassment had been reported against Mr. Weinstein. The board of directors motioned to terminate Mr. Weinstein and soon thereafter several prestigious organizations such as The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, The Producers’ Guild, Directors’ Guild, and Television Academy of Arts & Sciences have suspended Harvey Weinstein’s membership.
This is an example of Protective/Direct Tactics because these organizations are attempting to distance themselves from Harvey Weinstein and signal to the world their disapproval of his behavior.
I found this to be appropriate due to the alleged abuse of power by Mr. Weinstein and the alleged hostile environment created by him at The Weinstein Company over several decades.
