Importance of Persuasion

Domestic violence is among the top leading causes of homelessness, female homicide and high rates of mental healthcare cases. The first issue which has risen over domestic violence is whether the act should be prosecuted under criminal law. Some of the stakeholders argue that criminal law is appropriate for domestic violence whereas some favor mediation and reconciliation strategies (Loseke, 2008). In my opinion, domestic violence should be treated as a criminal charge because assault is a crime no matter the victim or situation (Lakhani, 2013). Mediation is not a good strategy because it tones down the violence. I am interested in this topic because it addresses a common issue in the society and conservation of human rights.

The second issue which is also related to domestic violence is the question whether women should get more compensation after being affected by violence. The argument is whether the women should get more or whether they should be treated equally with their counterparts, the men. Research has shown than nearly 85% of domestic violence victims are women (Ezell, 2009). Statistics also show that female victims find it harder from being a victim and the compensation helps them recover more quickly (Lakhani, 2013). I personally support the fact that women should get more compensation. I am interested in this issue because it relates to my future career goal of becoming a domestic violence victim advocate.

Persuasion is a term which can also be used to mean influence, which is my general aim in this. The issues which I have addressed under the general problem of domestic violence are very crucial. The latest statistics conducted by accredited institutions show that approximately 4 women are murdered each day through domestic violence (Buzawa & Stark, 2011). My appeal is addressed to the government because they can consider the domestic violence legislations, the human rights activists because they are capable of advocating for the domestic violence victims and finally the society because they can help to report the domestic violence perpetrators.

The problem I have addressed is a complex problem which requires a coordinated response from all stakeholders. That is why I need all the relevant parties to consider my side. My side of the opinion is the best because it is more logical and considers the feelings and the rights of the victims. It will take a combined effort to reduce the alarming statistics and reduce the rate of deaths associated with domestic violence. My point of view is also better because it has scientific research and statistics to support its workability and success. I believe it is time that some social problems such as domestic violence come to an end. More organizations should work to defend the rights of domestic violence victims.
